Rice Milk - juice or not?

Hello,

Regarding rice milk I saw quite a few threads on here that compared rice milk to juice.  I'm wondering if this product is better than the rice milk that was compared to juice.  Because reading the labels side by side along with cows milk and goats milk they seem quite similar.  Besides the fat and carbs.  See the link to the product below.

My daughter is 14mos. I breastfeed her once in morning and once before bed. I used to give her one sippy cup of frozen breast milk during the day. But my supply is very low. I believe she needs some nutritional drink during the day and she did not tolerate cows milk. Would you agree? She seems to like Organic Enriched Rice Milk (see link). I've only given it to her 3x's . High in carbs. Low in Fat. But the sugar, vitamin d, protein and other nutrients are matching those of cows milk and goat milk.

I tried giving her goats milk 2x's and she made a horrible face and threw the cup away. She also had HORRIBLE breath those two times. I even tried mixing it with breast milk. However, if the overall consensus is that goats milk would be better I could keep trying, bad breath and all.

I gave her one sippy cup of cows milk midday for 3 days. She loved it.  But she was constipated for the first two days.  She did wind up pooping but it was horribly painful and the third day she had 3 very large, loose poops.  She was also very irritable all three days and woke up in the middle of the night for 3 nights.  Then the 4th day she woke up with a runny nose and I thought THATS IT. She is not tolerating the cows milk. I myself do not tolerate cows milk so it wasn't surprising.

How would you rate this product?

Should I give it to her once a day, midday in a sippy cup?  She also drinks water.  Her diet is good. Whole fruits and veggies.  Fish, chicken, eggs.  Greek yogurt 1x/day.

thank you in advance for your time.

Sincerely,

Brooke

Rice milk is compared to juice for exactly the reason you stated - no fat, high carbs.  It is not suitable for children under 2, and most packages actually state that right on the label.

At that age, she needs the fat for proper brain development.  Since she doesn't tolerate cow's milk, she may not tolerate goat's - but be aware that not all brands of goat milk taste the same.  Unlike cow's milk, there's a variation in taste.  Some are very musky/barnyardy in flavor/smell, and some are sweeter.  You may need to try a different brand.  She may not tolerate it though.  In which case, my next stop would be coconut milk.  There's a new product from So Simply, I believe, that's in the refrigerated section next to the Soy and Almond milks.  For one cup a day, I'd give that a try.  For more than that, I'd actually go with the canned coconut milk, which is higher fat, and water it down (the stuff in the cartons has been defatted a lot).  If that doesn't work for either of you, then Almond milk or Hemp milk are also good options with the healthy fats necessary.

What about yogurt? Its easier to digest because the bacteria break down the lactose and casein and has as much fat as the milk its made with. I make some at home using the crock pot method. It turns out more like a thick yogurty drink. I add a little maple syrup and vanilla and my DD drinks one or 2 cups a day. You can make it with either cow or goat milk. I really enjoy it myself.
