mucusy stools and OALD? help please!

DS is 4 weeks. It seems that I have OALD because he gags and gulps when the milk is flowing. He fights at the breast and is becoming more and more fussy at night....and soooo gassy. He's definitely in pain. :(.

I never leak or spray, but I can feel the letdown and then him gulping, pulling off, latching poorly, etc.

He also has mucus in his stools.

Could that be from the OALD or is it a sure sign of dairy/other food sensitivities? I don't want to cut it out if I don't have to!

I've been block nursing and adjusting position while nursing for about  1 1/2 -2 weeks now--no change.

Ideas?

Thanks Mamas!

It definitely sounds like overactive letdown, and an oversupply. What length blocks are you doing? You might try a longer block, as long as he continues to gain weight nicely. Keep in mind, too, that at four weeks, your supply hasn't regulated itself to the demand yet. That usually happens around six weeks, which also happens to be the peak of infant fussiness. So it may be that you just need a little more time, and the supply will settle down all on its own.

However, I think that with mucus in the stool, I would be concerned about dairy protein (casein) intolerance. Mucus is usually a sign of intestinal injury-- from a virus, from a dietary intolerance, from a disease. The overactive letdown symptoms usually show up as green, foamy poo. It's possible, of course, that it's all related to that. But I think I would be watching it carefully, and if reducing the supply doesn't get rid of the mucus, I would be thinking about an elimination diet. My DS was casein-intolerant. It first showed up as green poop, with mucus sometimes. Anyway, it progressed to the point where I started seeing blood in his stool, before I realized what happened, and by then he was miserable. I wish I'd realized sooner what was going on.

Thanks so much for the replies--

I started cutting out all dairy and soy yesterday. With DS #1 I did a total elimination diet for months and saw no results, but he was a different story. I'm hoping this one will be 'fixed' with no dairy. I do want to get him weighed soon, just to make sure that all is well with the block feeding...There's not really a set length of time I'm doing-- I just feed on one side for  2 to 3 feedings or until it feels like he's emptied the breast.

He definitely does not have green foamy poop, that's why I was questioning the OALD-- but all the other symptoms were there. Today it seems better (less gulping and gagging...but still mucus)

I just want him to be able to sleep peacefully=--not wake up in pain or need to be carried to sleep (fine during the day--but not at night!)

with dd2, she would cry and fuss at the end of feedings and had mucosy poo. It was a dairy issue for us, it took me a long time to figure it out too and i feel awful about it to this day!

I has to eliminate ALL dairy, I mean anything that had casein at all, you'd be surprised how much stuff has it! (crackers, cookies, bread, etc) Within a week there was a VAST improvement in her demeanor at feedings, and in about 3 the mucous was gone.

Thanks! I cut out dairy last week, but then inadvertantly messed up yesterday, so I'm starting over. I'm hoping it's the key! I'm looking for a good 'hidden dairy' list if you have one.

avoid anything with casein, or whey in the ingredient list.

are these mucusy poops always green?   my daughter has yellow poops but they have some mucus in them - or are a bit runnier without the cottage cheesiness i am used to.  she sometimes seems uncomfortable after/during feedings - but is usually easily comforted.

she does currently have a cold - who doesn't...could that cause the mucus.

her stool has never been green.

thanks!

My LO's stools have only been green once or twice, but they are always full of mucus. Ecky-- it sounds like your daughter's mucus could be due to the cold-- I definitely read that mucus could be due to a virus -especially if it isn't consistent.
