Sandpaper Letters--too small?

I really like these sandpaper letters http://www.etsy.com/listing/62628681/mini-lowercase-sandpaper-letters , but I'm wondering if they're too small for a just-turned 3 year old to trace and use effectively.  I think the cards are 3"x1.75"

I have two reasons for wanting the mini ones.  First, I'm just frugal and don't want to spend much money.  Second, we're tight on space and I'd also like to use them with an alphabet box like here: http://countingcoconuts.blogspot.com/2010/06/alphabet-box-part-i.html

I don't have the time to make my own sandpaper letters.  DH and I are both full time students and we each work parttime.

So...do you think the mini ones would be too small?

Those are really tiny. I don't think they'd work even for little kid fingers for tactile feedback. And there's no room for the child to hold the card down and keep it from sliding around.

I think you would end up being unhappy with that purchase.

I know you don't have much money and you don't have time, but maybe you could make 3-6 sandpaper letter cards of your own and start with those while you save up money for a larger set?

Personally, I don't like the ball and stick font, but http://www.kidadvance.com/Store/ProductDetails.asp?pid=58&catid= is fairly cheap and includes a box.

Now, if you're just wanting letters to accompany an alphabet box and you don't need letters for tracing, then I'd just print them out from the template included in the blog post about the alphabet box that you have above.
