Baby sign for diaper?

What do you use as they sign for change diaper? Dh and I can't agree. He wants to do the sign for toilet, but I think this will be confusing when we are potty training. I thought maybe the sign for dirty or maybe for change? The actual sign for diaper seems to be too low on the body to do so she can see it.

I think its the sign for change ive seen, 2 fists stacked and then reversed. Like if you were clasping your hands together. Hard to describe.

And for your dh, if you realize she's going while she goes (poops are often easy to tell, and of course you'll know if she goes when her diaper is off :D) then sign toilet at that time and tell her "you're pooping/peeing/going potty" before moving onto discussing changing her diaper.

Who knows, you could end up with her signing that she has to go while her diaper's still clean on occasion!

I just use "toilet."  I'm not worried about it being confusing later.

We do "change," as shown here (maybe not quite as well as she does it but close enough).

Thanks for posting that site!  Much more useful than the book I have.

We sorta pat our hips. We started with the "diaper" sign, but then DD1 sorta interpreted it as a double hip-pat when very young because that was easier for her, and we just went with it. We're not sign language purists by any stretch of the imagination, as we just focus on communicating and understanding each other. DD talked a bit earlier than we expected her to, and the signing naturally dropped off... so it was long gone by the time she was learning to use the potty. Though honestly, a sign would have been a lot less embarassing that a kiddo yelling that she needs to go to the bathroom! lol.gif

Good point about being able to talk when potty training comes along, although I am considering EC still...

Sheepish.gif whistling.gif Remember, part-time EC is a-okay! It doesn't have to involve anything more than signaling your LO when you know they're going or holding them over a potty when they wake up dry from a nap or to see if they have a bit more poop before putting on a clean diaper. Saving 1 diaper means you have successfully ECed!

And it's cool to start EC after you've got nursing sorted out and are more used the new person in your life.

Just saying, you can "try before you buy" as it were.

We just made something up.  I would hold my hands out flat, palms together like a sandwich and then flip the top hand over so that the palm was facing up.  It really doesn't matter what the sign is, as long as you're consistent.
