Green Pea Allergy

Thread Starter

When I was six years old my mother wondered why my eyes went puffy and throat got itchy if I ate vegetable soup... the answer was PEAS.

Green peas, chick peas, dried peas, lentils etc still make me feel awful to this day; itchy eyes, sore throat and redness being the main symptoms.

I am not allergic to PEAnuts and this almost makes it more socially unacceptable - "NO, you simply can't be allergic to peas??

Please can somebody clarify what I am allergic to? Peas in a pod (mange tout) are fine, and even some hoummouses - bizzare.  But green peas, chick peas & lentils are all obvious allergins

Thanks,

Ben

Have you been allergy tested? A friend of mine is allergic to most legumes. However, if the legume is cooked at all (even just al dente) it changes the protein structure enough that she is no longer allergic. Otherwise she gets itchy throat and lips, etc. She is allergic to peanuts as well though. That might be the same for you. But I'd go to an allergist if I were you.

We have a lot of intolerances here (not IgE allergies) and at the beginning of it, there were about 40-50 foods each of my intolerant kids were avoiding and people thought it was funny that for all the things they couldn't have, they could still have peanuts.
