Skin reaction possible?

Hello,

my dd2 is now 16 months. In mid december, she had her second dose of diptheria, polio, tetanus, pertussis. Since then she has had a scaly, red, itchy rash on her neck, chin and some of her cheeks. the severity has varied but I can't get it to go away. She has some food intolerances but she hasn't eaten anything containing the colprate foods (unless there are new ones). I was leaning towards it being food related but just want to know if a skin reaction like this is possible and if it is possible so soon after the vax (it started within 3 days after). I always though reactions to vax started 2 or 3 weeks later.

TIA

You know, if she has food allergies it may be a reaction--some vaccines are cultured in cells from eggs.  And because it's not the virus she's reacting to, but the egg-stuff, it would be an immediate reaction.  Someone prone to allergies needs to have that taken into consideration when weighing the risk vs benefit of vaccines.

OTOH, though, 'tis the season for viruses, which can cause rashes (my kids always get bumpy viral rashes in the winter, whether it was a vax year or not--I can tell when a cold is about to descend on us by the bumps).  Having allergies is often also connected to excema, so that's a possibility (and scaly, red, and itchy sounds a lot like the excema I've seen).

It could be a milk protein allergy - the DTaP is made with casein.  My 5.5yo has exhibited symptoms of allergies since getting his 5th DTaP (and having a mild reaction) in July, and I finally put 2 and 2 together and just had him tested for allergies.  He has NEVER had allergies before this, but he's gotten the dry, scaly skin, perpetual coughing and bowel issues since a simple cold in August.  He's been to the doctor several times and we finally got him tested for allergies (won't get the results back for a couple of weeks).

Thanks for teh replies. I didn't even think about a food connection with the vaccine. In fact dairy is the thing she is intolerant or allergic too (haven't tested, did an elim, diet while nursing).

Will have to look into that now. Thanks again ladies !
