DD peed on the rug. Replace? Wash? How?! Help!!

Yesterday morning my DD peed on the rug that her and her sister play on.  It stays on the floor behind the couch and kind of "marks" their play space as we have an open living area.

I don't know how to deal with this.  It's a 4'x6' rug.  Not huge, but def too big for me to wash in my bathtub.  If it were summer I'd get at it with the hose and a scrub brush.  The urine is in a large spot.. maybe 2'x2'.  I rolled up the rug and put it in the laundry room.

Should I just replace it with something?  We got it for like $40 on sale at Target, it's a Circo rug.  The same one is now 80 bucks!  It's a pretty cheap quality rug though.. the fibers started falling out about a month ago...

So what would you do?  get a new one?  wash it?  how?

And btw, we NEED a rug for the girls to play on as we live in a basement with stone floors over a concrete slab.  Cold and hard :(

And if your verdict is "replace"... replace with what?  It can't be very expensive as we're broke with a capital B...

My daughter has peed on several rugs (and poo'd too, but that's a totally different, ridiculous story...) and we used Nature's Miracle to clean up.  Yeah, the spray for pet accidents eyesroll.gif Worked like a charm!

I dealt with pee puddles on various items with vinegar, baking soda, and water. If you have  largish sink it shouldn't be too hard.

I would douse the spot with vinegar, scrub in some baking soda, and rinse thoroughly.

If you replace, maybe see how large of a cotton bathmat you can find.  Possibly two matching ones on an anti-skid pad would work.  I have a few big cotton mats (maybe 4X6) that I can stuff into the washing machine (one at a time) as needed.  Or what about those foam puzzle mats?  I was seeing them at Marshall's not too long ago, not more than $20 for a 4x4 square.  Of course, the kids might keep pulling them apart, but if they don't, it makes a nice play surface and the pieces can be washed in a sink.

We do vinegar on pee too...and puke and poop and everything else.

Does your shower have a tension rod? Is it too wide to move the rod to the middle of the shower to hose and scrub it down?

If you decide to replace it, I l-o-v-e cotton rag rugs. We got our 5x8 rug from TJ Maxx or Marshals for $30. I've seen them for less (and smaller ones) at Big Lots as well. Not only are they cheap, but they're machine washable. If you're really, really strapped for cash, the 2x3 throw rugs are typically $2 each and fairly easy to stitch together to make a larger area rug.

I can't imagine replacing a rug, just for pee. Between three kids, and four cats, we've had plenty of pee, and a whole lot else, on our rugs. I start with a vinegar and water solution-- spray it on liberally, and then rub at the spot with a towel. Then follow that with plain water, and do the same. Then I wait until it dries, and sniff. It it still smells like pee, a pet-odor enzymatic cleaner will work great. You can also sprinkle it with baking soda, rub it with a stiff brush, leave it sit an hour, and then vacuum. As a final resort, I would rent a steam cleaner.
