Just a vent...I know you moms will understand

My cousin's wife just had her baby today.  She had a scheduled repeat c-section at 37 weeks.  The pregnancy was picture perfect and the baby was absolutely healthy...why must they take him out so early?!  Well, needless to say, his lungs were premature and he his now in the NICU :(

I'm so sad and frustrated :(

37 weeks with no medical issues?  That's so irresponsible!  Many hospitals (including one in our area) are starting to disallow elective c-sections before 39 weeks.  I think it's a good idea.

Yeah, I don't get it...makes zero sense.  And yes, I agree...so irresponsible!

That almost seems like negligence. I am surprised that not only would they schedule an elective section that early, but also that they did not check lung maturity with an amnio the day before. We were never, ever allowed to schedule a section before 39 weeks unless it was truly a medical necessity (pre-e, bleeding, out of control GDM, etc...). I would question the doctors and the hospital regarding their policy about elective sections. Doesn't seem right.

Sending prayers for the little one.

the AOG says no inductions/c sections prior to 39 weeks without medical reason. so either

a- the doctor is horrible and not following protocols

or b- you dont know the whole story.

I really must not know the whole story, because it makes no sense whatsoever.  I'm just going off of what my cousin (the father) has told me.  His wife was tested for pre-e and GD, but passed with flying colors.  The baby was in a breech position...would this affect how soon they did the procedure?

It shouldn't affect it since she was having a section regardless.

I wonder if she was "measuring big" and they moved up the DD.  So you thought she was 37 weeks (and she probably was), but in their minds, she's 39 or 40 weeks, so an ERCS is A-OK.  shake.gif

That is a common occurrence! I know I was measuring "too big" and they almost disqualified me from the birth center! I legit went on a diet so I wouldn't gain too much more weight and had my birth all natural TG. Oh right and they were afraid she was "well over 10 lbs" in which case I would have "needed" the hospital...

she was 8lbs 6 oz so she wasn't scrawny but she is all cheeks!

Anyways woman are afraid of birth for the most part in this country and most people in general just blindly trust Drs so the second they recommended it for whatever reason I am sure she thought she was doing what was best.

grouphug.gif I hope everything will work out the best it can. I am sorry your family is going through this.

That's unfortunate, whether because someone made a selfish decision or if someone made a diagnostic error. I hope the baby does well and is able to leave the NICU soon.
