high iron/iron overload to breastfed baby/need to decrease breast milk

My iron saturation is 79.  My other health issues keep needing me to take supplements etc. that you shouldn't take when you are nursing.  I have a 14 month old son and A BUNCH of breast milk.  My ducts often get plugged if I go to long without nursing.  Is my son's liver in danger of having too much iron?  Is this horribly high amount of iron going to my son when I nurse him.  Maybe I really should wean.  If so, what to do about so much breast milk (already taking herbal teas for milk reduction)?  My ferretin levels are within normal range.  The doctor has not completely ruled out that hemochromotosis.  My thyroid isn't working properly, just started armour thyroid meds.  I have hypoglycemia.  I eat low carb for candida issues and am taking nystatin and diflucon.  I also take vitamins and herbs and supplements, but have stopped iron vitamins and vit. C supplements.  Any factual advice is very welcome.  This is my first time doing this.  I hope it works.

I don't think it would affect iron in the baby--what did the doctor say? You could have his iron tested if you're concerned. If you didn't do that at a year it's a good idea anyway imo. This is what I know....you may have a high saturation becuase of those supplements--I believe iron supplements can increase saturation. Also--was the lab repeated? They can make mistakes that cause that type of value. Usually I would have expected your ferritin to be high as well. I'd get a retest after you've been off and consult with hematologist.

I'm nearly certain the nystatin or diflucon are ok in nursing--your pharmacist would know as should your doctor--but I know people who've been prescribed those for thrush while nursing.

You'd want to check herbs/supplements for safety. Pauling institute is good for looking up safety information for vitamins/minerals. You can google other supplements for safety.

The low carb may be making the hypoglycemia hard to control--it does in my son.

I'm glad you're getting the thyroid regulated. hug.gif

I do not believe you need to wean for the baby health. Sometimes people need to wean for their own health. I can't tell from your post if that's your situation or not. It sounds like you're more concerned about effects on the baby?
