Slow Flow Nipple Recommendation

Thread Starter

I am using the Evenflo Classic Glass Bottles with the slow flow nipples for DS (just over 7 weeks old).  But, the flow just seems to be way too fast for him.  He is often gulping (for lack of a better word) his milk and subsequently having a lot of gas.  Thanks for any help!

The slowest flow nipple we've found is the NUK Orthodontic nipples. With those, DD will take forever to finish and has to suck a lot. Every other kinds we've tried (a lot!) are too fast and she finishes way too fast and then spits up a lot. I'm not sure if you're giving breast milk in the bottle or formula, but LLL recommends plastic bottles for breast milk. It's something to do with the glass walls and the fat in the milk. Just FYI. Hopefully the NUK will work for you.

We had the same problem, in addition to the girl having a deteriorating latch with most nipples.  We got the Breastflow bottles and it's worked beautifully since: http://www.learningcurve.com/breastflow.  I guess the premise is that it requires both sucking and pressing the same way as a boob so it's ideal for a breastfed baby.  After having too-fast flow with the other nipples the first two times we tried the Breastflow she got frustrated (and crying ensued...), but once she got used to it there have been no problems.

Also another benefit is that it takes her almost as long as it would on the boob to finish a bottle (without having to take it out of her mouth) because she has to work for it - a real benefit when you've got a little one like mine that HATES having the bottle or boob taken away from her at any time while she's eating!

Oh, and my girl has had major spitup and gas issues in the past, but no problems with the new bottles/nipples!

I second the breastflow bottles. DD has to actually work for her milk, instead of it just shooting out. She actually takes longer with these bottles than at the breast. And they are easy to clean and don't have leak or drip issues.
