Tips to avoid PTL??

Thread Starter

I am pregnant with number four, due in July, and have had three preemies.  Not horribly early, but the last two were in the NICU for a couple weeks.  35wks, 32wks, then 34wks.  I am 15wks tomorrow and already having a TON of BH contractions.  My OB has already given me Procardia (though we she doesn't want me taking it yet) and Mag. Ox., which I am supposed to be taking if the contractions come too close and too often.

I am wondering if anyone has any "natural" suggestions for dealing with contractions and PTL.  I am careful to drink lots of water and rest as much as possible.

Has your OB suggested the weekly progesterone shots?  They have really been shown to help decrease the chances of ptl.

She was hoping for natural ideas.

If you're anemic it could lead to preterm labor. I recently upped my iron and D3 intake to prevent ptl myself.

Good point... I was anemic with DS and on some pills that didn't help. This time I took FLoradix when my bloodwork came back low on iron/HB. Not only did I carry her nearly to 40 weeks, I also bled super little. With DS I bled forever.

I would also get checked for bacterial vaginosis, yeast, and perhaps GBS, all of which can trigger preterm labor. I don't know about the mag ox prescription, but perhaps some supplemental magnesium (we take Natural Calm) would help too? Vitamin C can strengthen your amniotic sac as well--just in case.
