Midwives, Birth Resources, Family Planning in Louisville

Hello,

My partner and I are thinking about beginning the process of trying to conceive a child together. We know that it may be a long process, but I really like to have all my resources at my fingertips before hand. We are hoping to begin the process within the next six months. We decided that I am going to be the one getting pregnant. I am a very healthy woman but my only drawback is that I have irregular periods. Well, they tend to be 80 days apart at the very most. I've seen doctors about it when I was a young teen and they told me that it was normal for some girls to be irregular and there was nothing wrong when they tested me.

We want to know if there are any midwives in the Louisville area. Are there any that know anything about family planning and who could possibly help us out? If not, are there just any midwives in this area for when we actually conceive and prepare for birth? If so, can anyone tell us about them? Their personalities? Prices? Experience? We are completely new to this, so any information what so ever is greatly appreciated.

I haven't visited this board in a while, so I'm sorry that you haven't yet gotten a response.

Yes, there are homebirth midwives in the Louisville area.  Due to the politics in KY, they are not licensed and thus tend to fly under the radar.  Here are links to 3 midwives who practice in Louisville:

I have met with all three, and am currently the client of one of them.  Let me know if you'd like more specific info on any of them and I can message you.

There are some others as well, but in my experience, you have to work harder to find them.  There are some Certified Nurse Midwives in Bardstown and Frankfort, but the closest ones to Louisville are in Jeffersonville at WomanCare, if you are looking for a hospital birth setting.  I have seen Allison Reid there prior to deciding to have a homebirth.  They deliver at Clark Memorial, which I have heard lots of good things about when it comes to natural birth.

As for your other issues-- I saw Dr. Erid DeYoung ND at the Center for Alternative Medicine prior to getting pregnant to work on my pre-conception health.  I did not have the same issues as you, but I had some other hormonal issues that needed to get balanced out.  As soon as I got through my treatments with Dr. DeYoung (all homeopathic) I immediately got pregnant.... actually without really trying.  We hadn't previously tried, so I can't say that it would have been harder had I not seen Dr. DeYoung, but I have a feeling that it helped.  He's very knowledgable on hormones and that sort of thing.  His practice is really busy, though, and I always had a long wait even with scheduled appointments.  Those are the only real negatives.  There are several other NDs in Louisville, but I don't have experience with any others.
