I know nothing but I really want to learn...help!

DH and I bought a house last year and we have a pretty substantial yard for this area (NYC suburb) and I really want to learn how to garden. I would love to be able to grow some fruits and veggies, but I have no idea what I'm doing. When I say no idea, I mean it. I have never planted anything, I have never even had a yard in my entire life. The property has gone untouched, there are a bunch of trees and that's it. I don't know anything about soil, and I have no clue where to begin. Can anyone recommend a book, website, or someplace where I can get started? Many thanks...and please, be gentle!!!

I would recommend Square Foot Gardening. It's really a great concept and they spell everything out really nicely, esp. for beginners. Congratulations on your new yard!!!

I love "Vegetables, herbs and fruits" by Biggs, Mcvikar and Flowerdew. When I started I also looked up a lot of blogs and videos on Youtube. I just started a blog that will have a lot of gardening info if you want to visit. I mix vegetables, fruits and flowers with companion plantings ( some plants grow better when they grow next to other specific plants), completely organic.

If you are interested in that kind of gardening you should check out any book by Rosalind Creasy.

We also plan on growing some potatoes in "garbage" bins this coming summer.
