10 week old, blood and mucous in poop

HI! I'm looking for some advice about my babe. A bit of background: My first child who is now 3 had horrible colic and bloody poops-I eliminated soy and dairy and the colic and bloody poops resolved. I am currently tandem nursing.

I now have a 10 week old baby; during the last trimester of my pregnancy I eliminated dairy and soy and have not had either since her birth. Around 2 weeks of age she became extremely gassy and her poops turned green, she was still happy, just gassy and had difficulty sleeping due to tummy pain. I eliminated wheat, eggs, citrus, tomatoes, and peanuts in an effort to reduce her gas. After 2 weeks there was no improvement. I began eating normally because I was starving (I'm also a vegetarian) and she remained the same.

I had a huge oversupply so I stareted block feeding-sometimes up to 12 hours per breast. Still, no change.

All of a sudden at 7 weeks her poops turned yellow, but remained mucousy. She had one episode of blood in her poop at this time.

I stopped eating wheat, peanuts, and eggs as I eat these a lot.

At 9 weeks she was still so gassy and having trouble sleeping due to gas-she had the occasional green poop, and mucousy poops about 3-5 days a week.

I started her on biogaia probiotic 5 days ago and stopped yesterday as it wasn't helping and she seemed gassier after it.

Today she had another very mucousy poop with blood in it and she has woken up 4 times in the past 2 hours:(

What do I do????? I'm at my wits end and I feel like I'm hurting my baby by eating something that is bugging her. I just can't figure it out    help.gif.

I should also mention that she was 8lb2 ounces at birth and 14 lbs 3 ounces at 9 weeks, so she is growing really well thumbsup.gif.

Well for me, you've obviously resolved the poop thing with the block nursing, and it has probably helped ease some of her tummy pain, but seeing as her poops are still mucousy it could be a combination of the two that are giving her discomfort - you probably know all of this but I'm just trying to summarise - lol, anyway, it could be gluten as a whole so you may have to eliminate anything that contains gluten in it, I would however, go to an allergiste - the french term I can't remember what it is in english -ha ha to try and find the culprit, and one that supports breastfeeding - which I'm sure isn't an easy feat - maybe go to your local LLL meeting to see if you can find someone who could recommend a dr, contact your doula or midwife to see if they know anyone who maybe able to clear things up for you without being advised to give up breastfeeding.  Well done - that you're continuing on with this, many wouldn't - congratulations!!  Look up the forum on Allergies in Health and healing I thin kit is for more information http://www.mothering.com/community/forum/list/307

Could she have tongue tie contributing to foremilk/hindmilk imbalance? That's my current guess for my LO's issues so, maybe? I know my DD has the posterior tongue tie and I'm hoping it's the sum cause of her problems. Yours sound like they may be more severe, but I just thought I'd throw it out there!

I had to write . . . My baby had mucusy, diarrhea, bloody diapers.  It started when he was 2 weeks.  He would poop 12+ times a day and was def uncomfortable and had a hard time sleeping.

I already don't eat gluten and I stopped eating dairy, soy, eggs, nuts, night shades, and spicy foods. I basically ate rice and chicken and didn't see any improvements.  I also block fed in 6 hour blocks and it didn't help.

I went to a GI  and he recommended that I take prescription pancreatic enzymes to help break down my breastmilk.  My baby had so much blood and mucus in his diapers and the dr. told me to give my baby elecare for 10 days while I pumped and dumped and took the prescription to break down my milk.  I was so overwhelmed and didn't have much support to pump at home so I didn't pump. I couldn't pump every 2 hours and feed my baby.  It was a hard transition because my baby had to learn how to suck, swallow and breathe all over again.

My baby was better in a day.  Happy, sleepy, normal poops happened in just one day.  I HATE that I didn't pump and take the pills.  I am feeding my baby out of my comfort zone.  I am so happy that he is better, but I feel so guilty for not bf. I bf my first for 2.5 years.  So I recommend going to the GI, getting the pills, and see if that helps. Hope it works for you.  Let me know if it does.  I am nervous that I will have the same problem if I get pregnant again and really hope that it works.

I don't have much time, but what about something like secondary lactose intolerance? http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/lactose.html

Ds2 had mucousy poop, and has recently had painful gas and mushy poop. I'm not entirely sure what causes it, but it's not one of the most common culprits.

eta- wanted to mention that most everything I've read/heard involving ebf babies with food sensitivities, is that you should focus on healing the mother's leaky gut. I'd really focus there.
