This is an old thread and I don't know if you've made up your mind yet. Just thought I'd chime in about my DH's parents' experience. His parents married and bought 40 acres with a barn and grew a lot of their own food and raised animals that they had slaughtered (except for the chickens - my MIL did that). My FIL worked full time off of the farm and my MIL tended to most of the daily farm work while raising 3 boys. My DH has fond memories of roaming free all day but also getting into dangerous situations. My MIL now says she was living her husband's dream and she has scattered memories from the expeirence bc she was so overdrawn and tired all the time. I do think she enjoyed it but I think managing so much of it on her own was overwhelming and detracted from the experience. They sold the farm and moved to a more residential property when DH was 12. So while it sounds amazing, just be sure you can handle the load on your own until your husband returns. That said, my husband has such fond memories of his childhood. It sounds pretty amazing to me. I know he wishes the same for our daughter. We live in a pretty urban area but are setting up our chickens now. A bit of his past come back again.

I hope you've made a decision and are living the life you've envisioned! :-)
