Covers Help.

Hey, mamas

I'd love some help with my covers choice.

I have about 16 Bumgenius, 2 Grobaby diapers, and 1 dozen NB prefolds, 1 dozen small prefolds.

For covers I was thinking of getting:

2 Thirsties Duo

2 NB Disana wool covers

1 pair Ruskovilla longies

What do you think of this set up?

I seem to say this a lot, but the only cover that fit my DS at birth (8 lbs) was a preemie cover.  So a OS cover wouldn't have worked for us.  We did use a lot of wool, but the 2 brands you quoted are awfully pricey for the length of time they're liable to fit IMO.  I've never actually used either brand just because of price.

One of hte beauties of woolies though is that when the babe isn't mobile, them being a bit too big isn't a big deal.  It's not like PUL covers, where you can expect them to hold the dipe on - wool doesn't do that anyway.  Drawstrings are your friend in wool, IME, because then a too large cover can still be used.  If you're dead set on those brands, or price isn't a concern, I'd go with a Small instead of a NB.  But I'd probably pick a different brand.  Or make some yourself.  You have plenty of time to learn to knit or crochet, and making diaper covers is a great nesting project.  It's tons cheaper than buying, too.  Or if sewing is your preference, you can repurpose old wool sweaters, or even buy wool fabric and sew some up.

If you really want to buy though, Babyology is a great affordable alternative.  My only beef with them is no drawstring, but they're practically bullet-proof.  My other fave is Pipers Closet, which is actually a wool wrap with snaps, and she'll do custom sizing to fit your child for cheap.  Both of those options are under $20, and they're the first woolies I reach for.

Oh, and I'd skip the NB PFs.  If you're going with GMD, just get the next size.  Most babes outgrow the NBs so quickly, it's not really worth it.

Thanks, Christeen - your reply has been a big help.  Actually, I've always been a bit intimidated by the Hyenacart - the format freaks me out but I just checked it (Spot's Corner) and bought a super cute NB soaker.  I'm going to take your suggestions into consideration for sure.  I guess what worries me is I have a hard time understanding how those loosely knitted soakers work.  Hum...I sure could get into just buying soakers instead of pants - they're so cute!!

Here's a huge image of the one I bought - what do you think?

For us, Thirsties Duo covers didn't really work for a few weeks—my guy's little bird legs were just too skinny to get a good fit. He's quite tiny, though (5-14 a few days after birth; 7-10 at one month old). Newborn Proraps covers worked very well for us, with prefolds just tri-folded and set inside.

Depending on what size baby you're growing, the bumGenius dipes may not be useful for a bit. Ours still gap at the legs on my guy, though I bet we'll be able to use them within a few weeks. So far, Rumparooz are the only one-size diaper that have worked from birth for us.

Depending on your laundry setup, you might also want to invest in another dozen PFs—three dozen should let you wash every other day with a few clean dipes to spare. We line dry, though, so our laundry turn-around time is a bit longer.

Ok, great - thanks so much.  I think I'm going to re-think a bit.  The Prowraps covers are very reasonable to I'm going to add 2 NB size to my registry.  I'll also add a second dozen of size small PFs.

So, for the infant stage that gives me:

1 dozen NB PFs

2 dozen Small PFs

1 wool cover (pictured above)

2 prowraps size Small

1 second hand aristocrats soaker size Small

Baby size wise - if this baby is like my DC (and I'm guessing she/he will be because ALL the kids in my extended family are like this) she/he will be born on the larger side (DC was 9lbs) and then basically grow SUPER slowly for the next 10 years.  DC was like 18 lbs at 1 year.  :LOL

Other factors: we live in a 4 season climate and baby is due in April.  Summers are HOT, hot (no AC at home!) and winters cold.

Give all of that I'd love to hear what you'd add to the list.

Thanks so much for your help!!

I might suggest a couple more PUL covers personally. Just in case wool doesn't work at first as well as you'd hoped. Runny newbie poo would be my thoughts.

I like the x-small thirsties, if you wanted something other than proraps to try. The thirsties are a bit nicer quality that the proraps in my opinion. Might add like 1-2 more covers, depending how much you plan to use the prefolds.
