My DD is six years old and when she gets a virus (cold or flu), she gets a rash all over her body. Usually it travels--I notice it first on her face or neck, then it moves to her abdomen and arms, and then down her legs before it goes away.
Â
Twice I've brought her to the doctor, because I figured her school would have a fit if I sent her to school with an unidentified rash. Both times the doctor said it's just her body's reaction to a virus. She said that if DD felt itchy or uncomfortable, we could give her an antihistimine, but otherwise we should just ignore it as a noncontageous thing.

I have very sensitive, rashy skin. It looks as though DD has inherited that from me.
this happened one other time after she was sick. She was covered in the most horrible hives from head to toe. This time its not as bad. She does have hyper sensitive skin in you touch her she gets red easily.  She was sick last week and high fever but has been fine for 2 day and now this. I thought maybe it was from the virus but just not sure. Thanks for your thoughts and helping put mind at easy.

Do they bother her? Are they itchy? My son got horrible hives that traveled all over his body--like his whole back would be welted red when he went down for his nap, then he'd wake up and it would be off his back but on his belly and face. It freaked me out, but it didn't bother him. This came after an illness went through our house a couple of years ago. It seemed to go away then came back again-maybe after another illness. I took him to the pediatrician and she was not helpful--she said it could be something he was eating or something I was eating, as I was nursing, and to give him a daily antihistamine. I did not like that advice at all--not helpful! It wasn't bothering him so I did not give him anything. I finally got the pedi to refer us to an allergist. He ran some allergy tests with the pricks on his back to ease my mind (he  didn't come up positive for anything) but said he thought it was Gianotti Crosti Syndrome. He said this was basically just that he would get hives after viruses. The distinction he said between this and allergic hives was that they did not itch or bother the child. Here is a link with pictures and my son's looked quite like this. http://www.dermnetnz.org/viral/gianotti-crosti.html I am reading here at this link, for the first time that it is often associated with the Hep B and Epstein Barr viruses. This site talks about how it is harmless and self-limiting and associated many viruses and some bacterias. http://www.dermatalk.com/blogs/skin-disorders/gianotti-crosti-syndrome/

My son is three now and has not had it since then--I think he was about 1.5 at the time. Hope this helps.
looks very very much like it. i was talking with my homoepath about it and she feels its from the virus but also the motrin i gave her. This happened before and when i recall it, it happened after the motrin as well. I dont know if it was one or the other or both or just how her body reacted to the virus. Even so it is very scarey to see.

thank you

I just posted something about this same thing happening to my 6 y daughter. She has a 104 fever for 5 days and I was medicating the fever with motrin more than I like and wondered if the bad rash that covers her today is from that and the fever. So, yes, it happened here. It seems like it is itching her a bit, but I don't overly want to give her more meds (antihistamine) since I am just relieved the fever is gone and we can look forward to health.

Out of curiosity ... How long has your rash lasted?
Interesting about the Motrin. Wish I could remember if I gave it to my son back then. I don't like to use it, but have when they are miserable in pain. I do remember this first happened after we had all been sick. I remember having to take Advil myself to kill some of the pain, so I may have been more free with the Motrin on the kids then. Been using it again recently with my DD 6 yrs who was suffering from an ear infection. Will have to continue finding alternatives for pain.
