When do I need to start scraping poo? And what should I use?

My DD just turned 8 months old. Up til now, I haven't done anything special with the poopy diapers since she was exclusively BF until 6 months and then we started BLW, so she wasn't exactly eating many solids -- maybe there would be a stray blueberry skin or bit of carrot in the diaper, but that was all.

Okay, so now she's actually started ingesting some quantity of food. The poop definitely smells worse, is darker in color, and more firm (sticky, really, instead of seedy/liquidy).

My question is, when do I need to start flushing her poo instead of just throwing it in the wash? Also, what is the best option for getting the poo out? Liners? (Flushable or reusable?) A dedicated spatula? A diaper sprayer (it seems pricy!!)? Another option I'm missing?

Everyone kept telling me that I wouldn't rave about cloth diapering once my baby started solids, and I'd really like to prove them wrongsmile.gif

ETA: My stash is really mixed -- we have some FB, some BG, some covers (Flip, GroVia, Softbums) and various inserts (Flip stay-dry, softbums, prefolds).

I tried liners, and talk about a pain!!  It's one more thing, ya know?  And I so could never stomach scraping.  But I LOVE my diaper sprayer.  Can't understand how I went so long without it.  Trust me, when the alternative is picking all the little bits of nicely washed poo out of the washing machine before you can do the next load, it'll feel less expensive.

As for when it's time - when the washing machine can no longer handle it was what I went by.  When they're eating foods they can't digest (like the skins of beans, blueberry, apples, etc.), and it comes out fairly chunky still.  Those little bits of detritus wouldn't fit through the drain holes in my machine, and after every load I had to be sure to pick up all the bits out of the machine or have it in with my clothes.  That's when I went looking for a solution.

Love my diaper sprayer! I can't imagine not using one. May seem like a luxury to some, but for me it is a necessity. I've saved a lot of money by CDing, especially by buying used, so the $32 I spent on a sprayer was money well spent. I have this one, and it has been great.

I third the diaper sprayer! I did without it with my first as I didn't think it was necessary, now I don't think I could live without it. LOL

Thanks for the advice, mamas. DD has started nursing a TON at night (teething, maybe?) and so her poo has turned back to more breastfed eyesroll.gif and thus removes the need for spraying/scraping for now.

I did get a pack of 100 free disposable liners from a friend, though, and the cost of the diaper sprayer really isn't that much over more than one kid -- plus it looks to be very useful post-partum.

Thanks again!

I just have a plastic stick (looks like a paint stirer) that I keep on a suction cup on side of toilet.  I scrape the poo off with that.

I'm curious - what does that look like? Is it something you bought or is it something you came up with? Is it portable? Might be good for travel?

It is the plastic stick that came with the gdiapers I bought.....they call it the "swizzle stick."  I never liked the gdiapers but the stick came in handy I guess!

The Diaper Sprayer is amazing.  I couldn't diaper without it.  We also use it as a bidet sprayer to spray our own bums before we wipe - so much cleaner and we save so much toilet paper.

We use liners, and we like 'em! Even though they're disposable, most of them can be washed and reused (e.g., from wet diapers), so that reduces our impact as well. Babysitters/daycare seem to like them as well, and they'd never ever use a diaper sprayer! smile.gif
