How Much Have You Spent on Your Stash? (Be Honest Please, Lol!) ;)

My baby is due at the beginning of March.  My older son is 7 and I didn't cloth diaper with him because I figured I "couldn't afford it".  However, as month after month went by I realized how much money disposables were adding up to be.  This time, I am determined to cloth diaper for many reasons (health, etc) and have been buying several different styles, brands, etc since I found out I was pregnant.  I have spent almost $700 at this point.  I was looking at some fitteds now and wanting them so badly, but I would be putting out another $200 to get the amount I am wanting and then I would have spent about $900 for all my cloth diapers (newborn, as well as some of which fit up to 15 pounds, some 20, and a few extras in large sizes for later that I got at a good price)!  There are a few AIO's, a few fitteds, 32 prefolds, enough covers, etc.  And I am really wanting these fitteds!  But $900!  Is that a ridiculous amount of money or does that sound about right?

My kiddo is due at the beginning of April, this is what I've got so far:

Newborn and small stuff:

- 20 XS Sandy fitteds + 3 ME Rikki Wraps (used on Craigslist)

- 6 Small Nana's Bottoms AIO

- 6 Small FuzziBunz pockets

One size:

- 1 Econobum cover & prefold

- 1 Flip cover only

- 1 OS BG4.0 pocket

- 1 OS FuzziBunz pocket

Accessories:

- Small and Medium PlanetWise wetbags

So far I'm at $310.  I still need a pail liner or two, some cloth wipes (I'm planning to buy blanks and sew them myself), and am considering some of those cheap Sunbaby pockets.  That would add another $100 or so to my total.  Plus I'm kind of itching to get a small fleece or wool cover to try...  And this isn't counting nursing pads or cloth PP pads for me.  Yeah, it really adds up fast!

Edited due to change of plans:

For our baby due in April, we've got a budget of $300 upfront. Cloth diapering is easily fun and addicting, but my husband and I wanted to make sure it remained the more inexpensive option, as well. If I had a choice, there would be no spending ceiling, of course. :) I have it set up so we will be getting through the first four months spending just around $200 for 5 dz prefolds, 6 covers, 2 snappis, a wetbag, a pail liner, a trash can to use as a diaper pail, and some safe detergent.

For DD1, I spent about $200 on 12 happy heiney one size diapers.

I sold the lot for about $130 and bought grovia one size and spent about $200, but only really $70 if you consider the $130 that I sold my happy heiney for.

I'm trying to decide what to do about a newborn stash now. I have a ton of one size wonderoos that will be perfect when the baby hits 6mo or so. So I'm trying to decide if I can justify a whole nb stash when my babies grow like mad. I'm actually flirting with using the wonderoos as soon as they fit on baby with a cover as backup just in case.

$400-500?  I didn't buy any newborn diapers though.

  • 2 BG 4.0s
  • 24 SunBaby pockets, 24 inserts (don't absorb much, need to double stuff most of the time)
  • 36 Osocozy Infant Prefolds
  • 24 Osocozy Premium Prefolds (at this point I do not recommend, VERY long)
  • 4 Bummis Super Whisper Wraps (2 small, 2 medium)
  • 2 Thirsties Duo Wrap, size 1
  • 3 Snappis
  • 1 Wet bag (should have bought 2)
  • 2 pail liners
  • 1 Gallon Allens Naturally & Dispenser

If I had to start all over I would have probably bought fewer prefolds and GMD prefolds instead.  I'd also want a different covers.

I've spent about $600 so far, and my son is 7 months. Not too bad. That's mostly Bummis prefolds, Thirsties covers and some Fuzzibunz for night time. I expect to "get a return" on my investment when I have the second child.

$256 and I'm cd'ing two.

*2 BG 4.0 (for nightime and I don't use the mf inserts anymore)

*4 Planet wise wet bags (2 large/1 med./1 small)

*6 xs thirsties covers (really like these, they still fit my 10 week old)

*3Bummis SWW newborn (grew out of these quick, seemed as if they would hold up longer than Thirsties but no extra gussets plus much stiffer)

*3 small thirsties covers (haven't used these yet)

*2 one size blueberry coveralls (back up covers that can be used for either baby or toddler)

*2 hemp doublers and 2 hemp/cotton doublers

Given to me (you'd be surprised what comes of talking about cloth diapers to people)

*5 dozen+ of Gerber/Curity flats (these are the old rectangular ones, very good quality and work great for both newborn and toddler)

*Mother-ease Air flow covers (1 med./ 6 large/ 4 xl)

I use old baby washcloths for wipes and I think that covers everything!

I was really lucky. I got 3 months of diaper service from my baby shower, and 30 (yes, 30) pocket diapers and inserts, a wet bag and a diaper pail. Wow - just writing that out amazes me. I have friends and family who were incredibly generous and supportive!

I bought two small (for wipes) one large (for dirty inserts) planetwise wet bags (~$50 in total), baby wash cloth wipes ($10 for 40) and some tea tree oil ($12) and Allan's detergent for washing ($19 a bottle).

Including the ones we received as gifts (AIOs), and such things as disposable liners, wool longies (which double as pajamas and/or pants), and unnecessary ones (pockets and various clearance AIOs) that I bought to experiment... we're probably at a total of about $1000. However, most are still in good enough condition for baby #3, arriving in about 3 months, even though a number of them will be almost 6 years old by then. I do prefer having a large stash, and not having to wash more than once or twice a week. The only brand of disposables I would have used is Tushies, which I once calculated would have cost about $2000 for the 2 1/2 years my son was in diapers, so even just on him we came out ahead. For all three kids, no comparison between spending $1000 on cloth diapers, versus potentially spending $6000 on disposables.

Trying to think of what we have - 36 infant prefolds, 12 premium prefolds, 12 MEOS, 5 newborn AIOs, 6 small AIOs, 19 medium AIOs, 7 medium/one-size pockets, 15 large AIOs, 5 wool soakers, 5 wool longies, 20+ PUL or nylon covers in various sizes. blush.gif It only seems like a lot when written out.  wink1.gif

hmm, I wish I would have kept a chart.  I buy and sell a lot.  My son is 2 and I say I have spent somewhere around, $700.  I am not as bad as some, but at least I know what I like and will go with that for #2.  I never bought any fancy designer fitteds, I do enjoy wool but there are deals to be had if you look and wait. so...

(gave 2 dozen infant pfs away to mamas who needed them)

10 trimmed premium PFs

10 regular PFs

3 Econobum PFs

1 flat, 4 Target flour sack towel flats, 4 receiving blanket flats

1 organic Flip insert

over 2 dozen well worn hand me down PFs

Me made fitteds, 10 MEOS, 5 ME Sandies, 5 L BG fitteds, 1 Kissaluvs,

about 18 pocket diapers & AIOs

about 20+ covers from, Me-made wool wraps & commercial wool, to Nikky to Thirsties (a lot in between).

2 Large longies, 3 med longies

Random doublers, etc.

So, in the end, I will probably give away most of my pocket diapers to moms who need them.  I think I will buy 6 new pockets (convenience diapers) for #2, 5-12 XS Sandies, 18 infant PFs, plus the flats I already have.  Many of the covers I own will be re-used (many are OS, too).  I will keep all my current PFs and use those when Infant size is out grown.  I will keep all other MEs plus some size small Sandies for the 10-20 LB range.  I dont think I will be spending that much one subsequent LOs.

800, about to spend another 80 but thats for 2 kiddos

OMG $900 on diapers that's won't fit through potty training?!?!?!? that seems soooo excessive to me.

I've spent right around $300 for 2.5 years.  Had a newborn stash, then switched to one-size when kiddo hit 6 months.  We did prefolds and covers the first 6 months with maybe 8-10 used newborn fitteds/pockets/AIOs to fil in.  Then we switched to 24 mommies touch diapers at 6 months, I got them used and they are holding up great (the snap ones at least).

I think it's all relative. If you stay under what you'd spend for disposables, you've saved, But, if your goal is to save as much as possible, then you'll need to go used, buy cheaper (not AIOs) and stick to a budget.

our current stash:

4 dozen unbleached birdseye flats

1 dozen pins

2 snappis

6 NB and 4 small dappi's nylon covers

The cost of all this was around $95. We'll have to add some more covers in later on (the dappis are 2 for $6) and I have a practically new flannel sheet set (I hate sleeping on them!) that I'm going to make into some more flats and doublers. We do have 6 AIO BumGenius one size that were gifted to us a while back which I believe are new, but I am not considering using them at this point since I wash everything by hand and drying would be a big issue for just a half dozen dipes. We were also given some NB size Bummis SWW covers (gently used), but I think I'm going to like the Dappi's better unless we're home and we can just do without a cover at all.

Hopefully there will be some wool soakers I can add into the stash very soon, I got a couple sweaters to recycle, just working up the courage to do so since I am just learning to sew with a machine.

We bought about 36 infant prefolds and 24 medium sized prefolds (DD has used these since about 6 months--now 2 years old), about 3 newborn covers, 6 small covers (bummies and thirsties), 8 medium covers--DD still in these (bummies and thirsties).  We also bought a stash of cloth wipes and a set of snappis.  I believe we have spent about $300 dollars.

We will use the same diapers for this new babe, but I think I want to get a small set, maybe 6, AIO diapers (one size) to supplement.

why wouldn't they fit  through potty training? f i knew then what i do now i could have done it alot cheaper but we're still saving money over disposables. most of my stash are bumgenius elementals (expensive) and flips (half organics half stay dry inserts). thats including our diaper sprayer, 2 wet bags, 2 travel wet bags, laundry detergent ect. my ds is 2 and still on the medium snap setting so i'm pretty sure they'll fit for awhile

Wow that is a lot of money. I'm on my second child so the first set is what we made it through to potty training with, and the second is my additional cost so far for #2. If she were sizing like my first I wouldn't be spending more, but shes so super chubby I will probably need more diapers unless she thins out quite a bit when she starts crawling/walking.

Newborn prefolds - $96

Yellow edge prefolds - $54

Red Edge prefolds - $56

Covers - $65

Gdiapers + covers - 50$

Wetbag + Pail Liner - $26

Snappies - $3

Cloth Wipes - $24

*Gifted 6 Bumkin's size L*

Replaced worn out covers w/thirsties Duo: $64

Additional pail liner: $19

More snappies - $4

I sewed some more wipes from scrap flannel & knit some wool covers

So for 2 kids I'm at $461. I would love to buy some fancy stuff but truly what I have will last, and even for more kids

I was feeling extravagant for spending $400 on baby #3, that's enough to last through potty training. I'm using fitteds and wool. On my first I spent less than $100 (homemade prefolds) and on #2 I spent about $300 (prefolds and PUL). I try to buy used or make my own stuff and not use AIOs.
