My son is one of those kids who ate anything until he was about three.......shoveled in spinach and broccoli and chili peppers, you name it. He also has a lot of food allergies and sensitivities that drastically limited his diet for a while, and still does to some extent. (He's off gluten, dairy, eggs, and sometimes soy). But through it all he ate pretty well and I never worried....We ate mostly a whole foods diet with meats and local veggies....with some homemade cornbreads and the like thrown in, but he hardly ever had any typical baked goods, and never any candy or chocolate.
Â
Than came THREE. And I got pregnant and needed to increase my carb intake, so we started having things around the house that we never used to, like gluten-free breads, rice pastas, tortilla chips, etc. Now it seems like he craves these things endlessly. I'm not sure if it's because he didn't have them when he was younger and they are novel and now he wants to go whole hog, or if he's truly lacking in carbs ( I doubt it), or if it's a yeast thing that's making him crave all this white stuff (probably), or if it's just that children have a preference for the sweet taste (probably also).
Â
And then there's the fruit. He would eat only bananas and pears if he could. All day long.
Â
I don't even have a problem with any of this *in theory*. I more or less want to let him eat what he wants.....But the trouble is, you know what follows all these sweets and carbs -- MELTDOWN CITY. The low blood sugar sets in -- or something -- and the day becomes a challenge.
Â
I guess I'm just looking for some feedback, or shared experiences. What is your strategy with these kinds of sweets?
