Easy toddler proof storage

My 18 mo son is into everything.  He's figured out how to climb chairs and onto desks and tables and undo zippers.  I have no shelves or cabinets high enough to be out of his reach in the living room.

I have a smallish bin on my desk in the living room that is my catch all for knitting projects I'm working on, random school papers, books I'm reading, pens etc.  I just throw things in there because I want them in easy reach and there's no other specific place for them.  Tonight I found that ds had gotten into the socks I'm knitting him and cut the first couple of rows with my scissors :(  It wasn't fixable without totally undoing the whole sock and starting over.  It was half finished.  So, I need a new place for my catch all.  Or perhaps a toddler proof knitting bag.

Everything my husband suggested just seemed too inconvenient, a high cupboard in the kitchen  (easy for him, he's nearly a foot taller than me), a shelf in the linen closet, the space between my desk and the wall that is blocked off by ds's toy drawers.  What I really want is some wall mounted shelves in the living room, but I'm not sure my landlords will go for that, they're pretty picky about holes in the wall.

I am not an organized person by nature.  I need it to be easy, or I'm just not going to use it, and the stuff that lives in my catch all bin will just end up all over the place.  Maybe I'm super lazy, but opening a closet door several times a day seems like too much work, because it usually involves moving ds out of the way to get the door open, and then either chasing after him to get back whatever he snatched from the closet or moving him again to close the door, and then dealing with a little tantrum because I showed him something really neat and then took it away.  Any ideas?  Maybe something I can hang from those adhesive hooks that just stretch off easily when you move?  I'm really bummed about that sock.

I'm right there with ya. Ah, 18 months.

I keep all my craftie stuff in the pantry which is behind a baby gate. Lately the kitchen chairs are kept there too when not in use eyesroll.gif. Do you have a room or place you can gate off?

The thing I find the scariest is that my DS likes to reach up onto countertops and pull whatever is there down onto his fool head. I took a knife out of his hand three times today. Three times! And that is without having a chair to climb on.
