I'm going in for a muscle biopsy in a couple of weeks, because a couple of my doctors feel that I have something going on in addition to fibromyalgia and they want to get a chemical analysis of my muscle tissue. (Fun, right??) I met with the doctor doing the procedure yesterday and talked briefly about the anesthesia options. He wants me to take a sedative before the procedure and then have a anesthesiologist on hand to administer propofyl (sp?) and maybe something else. I expressed concern about going fully under because I'm on three different central nervous system (CNS) depressants already. He glanced at the list of meds, said it would be fine, and that I wouldn't be under general anesthesia even though I'd probably go to sleep during the procedure.
Here's my thinking now that I've had some time to mull it over. I reacted very strongly to all three CNS depressant meds when I first started them and took longer than expected to adjust. So there may be a sensitivity there. I'm not comfortable pushing that. Also, all those extra meds and having an anesthesiologist on hand during the procedure is going to add at least $600 to the bill -- at the very least. I had a skin biopsy done when I was 19 that ended up taking out a bit of muscle, and I ended up with 6 internal stitches and 8 external ones. It was done with just novocaine injected around the biopsy site and I was totally fine during and after the procedure.
The office left a message yesterday to schedule the biopsy. I need to call back today and make the appointment. Would it be crazy to push a little and ask that we just do local anesthesia rather than the whole shebang?
