Cod Liver Oil?!

Thread Starter

My GP just advised me to start taking a tsp of cod liver oil daily because my Vit D level was a bit low.  I'm on day 3 and really don't like it - plus I'm 8 wks pregnant and don't need anything adding to the nausea!  sick.gif

I'm taking a prenatal with 400 units of Vit D in it and wonder if that's sufficient.

Anyone else taking cod liver oil?  Ideas about how to make it more palatable, or other equally high-quality sources of Vit. D?

Thanks!

Would a fish oil caplet work?  There are "odorless" ones.

I take cod liver oil in capsule form, when I take it. My mom always swore that she had "fish oil burps" when she took fish oil pills, but I rarely get them. She kept hers in the freezer, though, and somehow that helped with the burps.

That being said, I don't think 400 iu of VitD is nearly enough, especially if you're in the northern hemisphere experience the middle of winter right now! I have a 5000 iu capsule in the house right now, but I forget it about half the days. I've also bought 1000 iu and 2000 iu, but that was when I was remembering to take them more often.

I was thinking the same - that 400IU isn't much.  Just read that nursing mamas need at least 4000 IU daily for any of it to get to babes in breast milk.

Sounds like I could easily take more, and in a more palatable format.  Does anyone know if there is a difference in quality/availability of the Vit D if it is in caplet vs. oil?

Thanks!

That I can't help you with, Maggie. You might try to post that as a question on the Health and Healing board!

I take mine in capsule form-- but it is just the oil in a gelatin capsule, so I would think that the availability would be the same.  Capsules tend to be a bit more expensive, and I think that's the downside.
