When can I use a blanket?

When did you introduce a blanket in the bed with your DC?

We co-sleep and have always used blankets with DD in the bed with us. We kept them down low on our bodies when DD was little but now that it is cold the blankets are creeping up higher and higher. I am not sleeping well because I'm checking to make sure she is still breathing more now than I did when she was a newborn. Am I being overly cautious or reckless? DD is 8 months now.

We co-sleep w/ comforters and have for a while - probably since six months or so.  DD sleeps inbetween the two of us, but DH and I have separate comforters, which I think helps.  I position one side of my comforter over DD (a little higher than her waist) and then sort of tuck it in between us just a little (if that makes any sense) to keep her side in place and then I put my side up over my shoulders (I get so cold at night!).  Works like a charm.

DH and I also have separate comforters. For very little ones (newborn-4 mo prob) I use a sleep sac and just have my comforter around me. I can't sleep and nurse, so I just move the comforter off my upper body when necessary. I think if it's really cold I also wear a sweatshirt over my jammies. With an older babe (4 mo - 10+ mo), I have a small baby quilt (maybe 2 feet by 3 feet?) that I tuck under babe's arms and I still have my own comforter. I think I started sharing my comforter with my dd around 10 months this time but you'd have to gauge your own child.

Also, I move my babe's up after nursing so they are near my head (to avoid any comforter mishaps). I use a small couch throw pillow so there isn't a lot of pillow to worry about.
