Wow - Crisco? I might give that a try.... My DS also has bad dry skin - i use grapseed oil TWICE a day ...also i use olive oil in his bath , make sure the bath water is not too hot  - and we only bathe him every other day or so.

I second using castor oil.  I got some high quality stuff found in my local co op's beauty aisle.  its thick and sticky but its wonderful.  I also agree about oils in the bath tub and making sure the water isn't too hot.

have you also tried a humidifier?

thumbs up for all the coconut oil users!!  my husband is a carpenter and not only do his hands crack and bleed from being dried out due to weather, work-realted issues like drywall, etc...but he used to have a terrible candida overgrowth which resulted in cracked, broken, yellowed and deformed fingernals and nail beds.  he started slathering crazy amounts of cocnut oil on before bed(very high in anti-fungal properties) and after a while not only did his hands become smoother than a baby's bottom, but his names grew in beautifully and no more cracking ...nice normal healthy looking nails!
