My boyfriend and I would like to build a Tumbleweed tiny house (http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/) and there are small pieces of land around us that are actually reasonably priced. A lot of the people who've built tiny houses do so with really low budgets, citing Freecycle and craigslist as sources of low cost materials. This is really exciting for us because we live in a high cost of living area and we had pretty much given up on having a house anytime in the near future. Where else would we look? Has anyone else built their own house before? Are there any good forums online to discuss and ask questions? We're very, very excited about doing this and determined but we've never built a house before of course so it is a bit of a daunting task. My boyfriend's brother and dad have lots of tools and according to the Tumbleweed site, you only need basic tools to build their houses. I would also love to do solar if possible.

Where do we start? As for finances, I have a couple outstanding bills on my credit report that I'm in the process of paying off now as my tax returns come in. After that my only debt is student loans, which aren't in good standing right now but I'm getting help negotiating a reasonable payment plan for them. We want to have cash for as much of the house expenses as possible, but we're a single income family and I don't make a ton of money so we're trying to work all of that out...

Help? Suggestions? BTDT?
