I'd really appreciate some cookbook suggestions. Basically, I want very healthy recipes (no sugar, whole wheat, lots of veggies, etc) but that has very simple ingredients. We live in Brazil and it's not easy to even find frozen fruits or veggies so we basically need to eat what's in season. I've seen other cookbooks but they ask for stuff like brown rice flour, kale or other ingredients that I would never be able to find here. Thanks in advance!

I don't know what ingredients you have at your disposal, but there are a range of recipes in Feeding the Hungry Family. It's a pretty decent whole foods cookbook. You also may find more of what you need by building up a good list of blogs that you follow in a feed reader like Google Reader. If you're interested, I can list some of the blogs I follow. I also can look up some recipes in Feeding the Hungry Family if you send me a PM with some more info about stuff you have access to.Â
stacey, I'd love to have the blog names, thanks! The food that I can access here is pretty basic. For instance for veggies I can get currently potatoes, beans, avocados, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, green peppers, and sweet potatoes, that's about it.. Frozen fruit/veggies aren't possible to find really. I've seen stuff like whole wheat flour, lots of beans, etc. I don't know really basic stuff, not sure how else to describe it.

The food blogs I read aren't all whole foods blogs, but they're interesting for different reasons.

More-With-Less Cookbook by Doris Janzen Longacre
Â
Good, simple, economical, from-scratch recipes, many contributed from Mennonites who have done service and mission work throughout the world. (So it has a number of international recipes.) This is probably my most-used cookbook! The recipes are "un-fancy" enough that my kids tend to like most of them. There is also a nice mix of meat-based and vegetarian recipes, since for reasons of health, economy and justice, the author recommends cutting down on meat consumption. (I find most other cookbooks are either heavily weighted toward meat dishes or are exclusively vegetarian.) Where the cookbook does call for something I don't use -- dry milk solids and TVP are the most common -- I have had no trouble substituting other things such as liquid milk (with perhaps some adjustment of the other liquids) or ground beef. I highly recommend it!

I really like the Nourishing Traditions cookbook-- it seems to be very simple, and also Feeding the Whole Family.Â

Nourishing Traditions is pretty good and for sure is a good source of healthy recipes, but I don't find it "beginner friendly", meaning if you are not already into the Tradtional Foods way of eating you might not find these as useful. On the other hand it's a great source of information about whole foods nutrition, and if you are an adventurous cook and have a family willing to try new ways of doing things, it might be perfect!
Â
blogs I like for recipes -
Â
Nourished Cook is a good one if you are using the Nourishing Traditions cookbook, she is cooking all the recipes from it!
Â
GNOWFLINS has a ton of info on how to do the preparation methods called for in Nourishing Traditions, plus recipes of her own. I really like her sourdough series.
Food Renegade has recipes and how-tos, plus a book for homeschoolers that teaches kids about real, whole foods.
Â
Cooking Traditional Foods has a blog, a forum and a website dedicated to traditionally prepared whole foods especially for families with food allergies - gluten and casein free.
