crib bumpers

DD sleeps in a crib, and I always thought we'd be fine without bumpers, as they make me a bit nervous. But, she has started rolling and scooting ALL over the place. She'll sometimes have a hand sticking out or a foot. And she clonks her head on the slats as well -- never really hard, but still, it can't really help with relaxation and falling asleep, right? ;)

So, I'm thinking about a bumper. Are they safe? What about suffocation? Are there other worries? She's obsessed with straps and ties and things, so I sort of worry she'd seek those out and just fiddle with them all day and night.

Ack! Help!

I need the answer to this too. My son didn't have bumpers because I was afraid of SIDS but I'm curious about them now. All the paci throwing is getting old.

I think the main danger with bumpers is that with younger babies they can get their face up against them, not be able to move, and could potentially suffocate.  With a 6 month old baby I really don't see this as much of an issue.

The only other thing I'd worry about is that some kids will use them to climb up on and climb out of the crib.  As your child starts to pull up I'd keep an eye on that.

For #2 I'll be getting a breathable bumper, they are supposed to be much safer as there is no way for them to suffocate if sleeping against it and it keeps the limbs inside the crib thumb.gif. I'm going to buy from Walmart online, they are $24 and free shipping to a local store.

Breathable bumper!  I had one and loved it.  It kept DD's hands and legs in (not to mention the binkies) and  I didn't worry about suffocation at all.  You can also leave them on longer than regular bumpers because they collapse if the child tries to use it as a step to climb out.

We have a regular bumper which I put in when both my kids were about 6 months or so (once they got their arm caught badly between teh slats and the wall). It's fairly soft so can't be used to climb on. I figure that once they are mobile they will roll away from the bumper before suffocating.
