In dh's teacher licensing program, he has to take a diversity class. During the class about how to make the room a welcome environment for gay students, a suggestion list was distributed and one of the suggestions was "Prominently display a gay-related item on your desk."

:LOL

So, do you all have your friendly gay-related items?

That was what I was wondering...do they mean pink triangles? Pride flags, or posters for pride marches? It doesn't seem like there are that many gay-related items out there.

How about a photograph of a famous and witty and out gay person, like Oscar Wilde or Gertrude Stein?

Rainbows? lol IMO the best idea is hanging an array of pictures of accomplished people, some being openly gay...

BTW, I always laugh b/c in my Mom's neighborhood I'll ee the rainbow gay pride flag and I am so sure most of these people have no clue that's what it is and not just a cool flag...

Our school's gay-straight alliance made and laminated signs for the classrooms that say "This classroom is a safe haven for lesbian, gay, and transgendered students." Just to let everyone know that comments/discrimination wouldn't be tolerated.

I wonder, if school officials (or irate parents) knew that Michelangelo and Tchaikovsky (sp?) were gay, if their works could no longer be studied in music, art or history classes.

This reminds me of a great scene from the movie Heathers . In order to make it look like two homophobic football players killed themselves because of they couldn't reveal that that they were actually gay lovers, their murderer leaves a bag of evidence that they were gay. It included (IIRC) a Judy Garland album, a Joan Crawford video, and a bottle of Perrier. Maybe your DH could put some of those in his classroom!

I think that is fabulous!

There's a mini controversy going on in my area right now. A guidence counselor at our county highschool put a rainbow on his door to signal that he was accepting of homosexuality and that kids could come to him to discuss their issues. Some parents were upset about it.

Political correctness cracks me up.

Seriously, it does. I mean, I'm part of quite a few minorities myself, and I'm all for acceptance and diversity and all, but a teacher needing to display items on his her desk to show that they are accepting seems weird to me. I mean, wouldn't it then be right to include items to show acceptance of ALL groups? Yikes, the teacher wouldn't have any room to grade papers!

Wouldn't it just be better to have some kind of artwork, a poster or something, that has a statement about diversity and acceptance?

How about a Queer Eye for the Straight Guy calendar, like I have hanging over this very computer desk?

Wizard of Oz stuff, definitely.

And a socket wrench for those who speak Lesbianic.
