When did it become normal....

Thread Starter

for girls/women think you should shave every little hair down you know where?

Yesterday at school some of the girls (18-23) yrs old were talking about making sure their younger sisters knew thats what you should do.  One of the older ladies who has a 13-14 yr old daughter said she was gonna make sure to approach her daughter about doing it.  What the heck???

At school last yr when my oldest was a freshman they watched a childbirth film. The delivering mother was natural and the kids were all grossed out she wasn't shaved.

I understand keeping things trimmed but shaved?

Where did they get the idea this is the norm?

People were probably asking the same question years ago when women shaving their legs and armpits became the "norm".

I remember my own sister letting me know it was the appropriate thing to do if I was going to be wearing a bathing suit and the hairs might poke out (of course this was AS I was wearing that bathing suit!).  I'd honestly never thought about it and was a little embarrassed, but I'm thankful she told me.  I don't shave everything, but I keep it trim most of the time.

Honestly, I think it has become more normalized as naked and nearly naked pictures of celebrities, accessible pornography, and risqué advertisements have become mainstream.
The masses will always wind up doing what the media tells them is attractive. Right now the media favors hair-free women. I have no problem with women or men shaving any parts of their bodies, but I do think it is really sad how many young women feel they HAVE to shave (pubic area, legs, arms, whatever) in order to be considered attractive.

I agree that I think it's because of the mainstream media.

Didn't women (prostitutes) start shaving legs and public area as a means to stop the spread of lice and crabs?

I can understand approaching a 13 or 14 yr old about shaving her legs and armpits. But to me, saying she needs to shave her pubic hair is putting pressures on her that aren't appropriate. Yuck.

Having said that, I wish my mother had given me instructions on how to shave. I learned from other girls at school and finally figured out how to shave my bikini line to avoid razor burn in my mid-20s - an exotic dancer taught me. I think about her a lot in the summer. orngtongue.gif

Well, I've since discovered sugaring and it is the way to go.

But before that, I used whatever lube, if you will, soap, conditioner, shaving cream and then shave down not up. Rinse well after each pass. She said to apply deodorant afterwards. I skipped that step, but go w/o underwear for a few hours after shaving. Skirts or loose pj/yoga pants would be better than jeans.

I think it's a trend.
