How to give gripe water to 5mo EBF baby?

5ml is a LOT of liquid to try to get into a baby. I've sort of successfully given 0.8ml of tylenol before, but even then she doesn't swallow it all. Gripe water is much runnier (so easier for it to dribble out the sides of her mouth) and it takes a long time to give it ml by ml (or even less). Plus now she's old enough to grab for the dropper or cup I try to use.

I feel like I should just resign myself to the fact that she's going to wear $10 worth of fancy water on her clothes and not buy it again, but there must be a better way?

She doesn't really take a bottle well, not that I can imagine putting 1tsp of liquid in a bottle and having it function at all anyway.

have you tried a small cup? like a medicine cup or shot glass??? i started solids slightly after 5 months and dd just used a regular tiny cup for water (i obviously had to hold it for her...she's amazing but not that amazing!)

When you drop it in, mL by mL, do you blow on her face to get her to swallow? That still works wonderfully for my almost 10 month old!

We have a larger syringe-type thing that we used, and we tried to get her to suck on it. We also sing and dance and do all kinds of crazy stuff to try to distract her. We had some success, but I'm pretty resigned to the fact that there's only so much I can do with an uncooperative little one. smile.gif

I've tried a cup, and maybe we should just practice with that and a little breast milk, but she tends to grab at it and squirm so much that she still wears anything in it. I've never heard of blowing on their faces - will have to give that a try. I tried squeezing her cheeks, and that works to an extent, but it's a lot of squeezing to get that much in. I seriously wish it came in a more concentrated form!

You can make your own, actually, and then you could make it more concentrated.

We made our own "gripe water" and I use on medicine dropper and stick in in his mouth next to my nipple while he's nursing and do a little at a time. Its tricky, but I can get it the corner of his mouth. If I try to give it too him with out milk, he spits it out. I've also heard of moms mixing it with an ounce of breast milk and putting it in a bottle. That's what DH does with it.

For our gripe water we boiled anisie (sp?) and ginger for about ten miuntes, then added chamomile tea for another ten minutes. Then we watered it down 1/2 tea 1/2 water. We give 1ml and it seems to help, I think 2 would be more effecive though but I've been afraid to give him too much as hes EBF and the only other thing he's has is .4ml or tylonal twice.
