question about GMO corn

I try to consume as little GM foods as possibly which usually means buying organic and spending extra. I was thinking about corn syrup. Corn syrup is made from the 'sugar' (starch) part of the corn kernel. The germ, the nucleus of the corn kernel (which is a single cell), is not used. So, if corn syrup and other non-whole grain corn products do not contain the germ of the corn (meaning the person eating it is not consuming any genetic material) then what is the harm in eating them?

I'm just not a fan of how many products corn syrup is in.  Even if it weren't GMO... corn is in basically EVERYTHING.  corn syrup itself is empty calories.. and a sugar.  It is the opposite of nutritious.  There is no reason for corn syrup to be in so many things... it is perfectly possible to make foods without it.

Since corn and its myriad of products made from it is in SO MANY things, a great deal of our land is used solely for growing corn.  Corn depletes the soil and many farmers don't use crop rotation so corn is grown year after year depleting the soil and resulting in very unhealthy crops that require intervention.  This also erodes our soil.  The growth of corn over so much of our farmland also takes away from space we could use for growing other crops or providing grass for cows rather than more corn which they shouldn't be eating or providing more living space for people.

Some corn is fine, but there is SO MUCH corn and its wholly unnecessary.  I'm against how it is used so I try to eat as little as possible.

What corn syrup containing item are you interested in? I honestly cant think of one that I would be interested in eating, GMO or not. Corn syrup is empty sugar, highly processed and really has no positives to balance that (for the consumer, anyway).

But regardless, if you're comfortable with it, go ahead and eat it. You certainly dont need permission to make that choice.

My main reason for opposing GMO's is Monsanto. I can *not* support a company like that.

GMO's aside, I agree with the pp's. I like my corn on the cob.

Have you seen King Corn?

ETA: We also live in an area where corn has been monocropped on the fields for year after year. The soil is dead looking. Erosion is a really bad problem.
