Help! Â We are so completely covered in ice! Â There's a super thick layer of ice on my steps (that is constantly growing due to the ice in the gutters that drips down.) Â The ice/icicles drip down onto my steps and the layer just gets thicker and thicker. Â Yep, I'm using salt but it doesn't make a difference. Â Maintenance won't send someone out to clear the ice out of the gutters. Â
Â
School has been delayed by 2 hrs but I'm not sure it's going to be enough.
I have to go out by the back door and see how bad the walkways are. Â Then I have to make my way down to my car and assess that situation.

DOK- I agree maintenance should do something, but if you are looking for an idea look warm water poured over the step with help, then throw salt down. I had to do this yesterday since it was too cold to really melt the ice via salt. I poured a little and it broke up the ice and i could push it off the step. Don't pour too much or it will just refreeze.
But I agree, it is sad that the apt maintenance isn't doing their job.

Oh yes, the wise words from Granny and Nanny Ogg. I should start a journal of qoutes from them, they really offer wise advice. Like, in the wintersmith, someone is wondering why witches don't use magic to do laundry or wash the floor- the response is that that is what centers you, keeps you grounded- scrubbing, cleaning. I have to admit, it is wise adivce- I actually think Tiffany says it, but I would imagine she learned it from Granny (or the witch she was living with, whose name escapes me)

Yikes! Â I hope everyone dealing with ice and severe weather stay safe and warm.
Â
sweetsunshine- Your initiation sounds so lovely.  I am happy for you and hope it may give you strength when dealing with some of the hurts.

I have a lot to do on this end.  My partner and I did get jobs in Mexico and we'll be transplanting our family in July!  We're very excited.  I'm going to be a librarian!  New for me, but with my love of books, order and children, I think it will be a great fit.  We're ready for an adventure! "Adventure" also happens to be my 2011 word. ![]()

Already???
Tonite's ritual was amazing. Tonite I was initiated and dedicated to the goddess. I found my name and was blessed in a beautiful circle shoveled out in the snow, with a fire in the center. It was so magickal. Two dear friends and powerful priestesses were with me and they had the grids set up for each direction. We wore white and we wore the crowns of flowers which I made. It was so nerve wracking for me, waiting for the moment when my best friend would come and initiate me, blessing my body in the service of the goddess! But I made it through and it was meant to be. I hope that all of your Imbolc have been blessed and beautiful.
Oh, yay, that is so cool. Congrats! Yay you!

hugs, clay. my pg aversion was to paper. yes, paper. made my job at the time most challenging. ditto the freecycle idea, and maybe just beg for some. honestly, anything you can do to help you and your sanity and niceness of life.... plant a tree after, say some prayers for the earth, but do something nice for you. i can go on and on about this one, having gone thru huge amounts of guilt over some similar issues...... i'm happy to share with you. but seriously.Â
Â
can i just say, even i, who lurves FEs, loves the concept, loves the notion that the things i love beyond all sense actually can help beyond all sense... even i am utterly amazed at the power flowers can have. i've been taking a new FE for.... gosh, not sure how long now... since sometime in january. and it is just amazing me. i mean, i'm always telling people to take some.... but wow.Â

I am so sorry for all covered in ice and snow! It can be so inconvienent and overwhelming to a city and it's peeps. Sending thaw vibes to everyone. It's been clear and cold here, but sunny. It will be near 60 for the next few days, and then some rain comes again I think.

femme_rouge - that is so exciting, congrats to you too!

Our Imbolc celebrations went down the drain as DD and I have been laid up on the couch with flu, it's still 10 below here and masses of snow, and our plans to move back home look as though they have been seriously thwarted. I sent DH out today to find me some Discworld books from the used book store - and they sound just the thing I need right now!

DH brought home sposies (and a pepperoni roll lol). I LOVE him!
Â
sweetsunshine- congrats! :)
Â
librarian in mexico? AWSOME! congrats and omg-ness, what an adventure.
Â
avocado pit runes? What a fun idea. Do you then grow the avocado?
Â
We enrolled in WIC today and I can see I'll be making a loooooooot of yogurt. Even with all the options swapped in/out we'll get 10.5 gallons of milk a month. Since we don't actually drink cow milk, it's going to have to be proto-yogurt. Apparently dry milk qualifies so I'll see if anyone has the brand/size the ticket allows. That way I can spread things out a bit more. I was impressed at the "new" program (we had WIC for a few months when dd1 was born and dh lost his job)... brown rice, tofu, and fresh fruit are now options! Yum!
Â
Tomorrow is my ob/gynOnc visit. A bit stressed but generally positive. Fingers crossed for flat out good news... not that we can be "sure" till 18 or so weeks, but I'd really like a reassuring "there there" approach. LOL Bring on the paternalistic medicine, I need some hand holding!
Â
Second, third, fourth the suggestion to find the DiscWorld books by Terry Pratchett! The "witches" books are fantastic, but almost anything by Pratchett is going to end up on my "love it/want it" list. In fact, we have a whole shelf of Pratchett (my Solstice gift was the complete Tiffany Aching series, including I Shall Wear Midnight) and DH has read a DiscWorld book to each babe while still in the hospital. LOL (Reaper Man, dd1. Thief of Time, dd2. Going Postal, ds.) I can't wait till the kiddos are old enough for Tiffany Aching... I'm thinking around 8 maybe? Since there is a bit of earthiness about the Feegles ;) and I'm not ready for a horde of crivens! from the kiddos.

at work, we're down 1 programmer, but with the help of dh, we managed to apply a facelift to our website (well, the main page anyway) to aid a colleague in a splashy release of 80 sister publications on his pet organism, Daphnia (the water flea). Â so totally not what i wanted/needed to be doing today. Â
Â
blistering headache now because i've been whipping up wishy washy statements about this that and the other projects. Â i'm so not a writer :) Â it's a good thing that our campus media writer is talented - i link to his stuff and i borrow heavily from him.
Â
finally, it's starting to warm up here. Â ice is sloooooooowly starting to melt. Â spring can come any day now.
Â
clay - yes to freecycle requests for 'sposies. Â you can make up for it in other ways, no? Â
Â
FR - yay for adventures!
Â
DOK - ugh. Â i was reading my grad school advisor's blog - in CT where he lives, they've received 4 feet of snow. Â it was hard to tell if they've actually got that amount still or if that's what they've received. Â does your area have more? Â yay to pampered chef. Â can you add your link to somewhere? i still need to order their garlic presses...

Evening all.
Â
So much going on here. DOK I feel ya on the snow, we have been getting hammered here too. I am tired of snow!!! It's been so cold that the kids don't do anything but hang out in the house. After a while I just need some quiet. I end up staying up late just to have some alone time. I haven't been on the computer much, I just feel like veggin:) I am in need of some Spring weather, I need to open the windows and get some fresh air in this place.
Â
Get well vibes and hugs to those in need.

I'm very tired of the snow too, but some of it seems to be melting today. Just in time for sleet and more snow tomorrow! Ugh, will it never end???
Â
FR--being a librarian in Mexico definitely sounds like an adventure! Good luck!Â
Â
Clay, I hope the visit goes well. ::fingersx::
Â
I went to my local pagan shop today and hung out with some friends. They're having a Goddess ritual that I completely forgot to sign up for, and now there's no more room. Next time, I guess. But then for Full Moon, they'll be honoring Lakshmi, so I'll get some Goddess energy anyway. I told my friends that I was definitely bringing a curry with some coconut rice:D

My stomach hurts-- luckily I found some mint from last year
I didn't think I had any. I don't know what's wrong with me. I did finally get over the bronchitis. Yay.

Yay for DH! What's a pepperoni roll? It sounds really, really yummy. And yay for WIC. I didn't have that when ds was little. I don't even think I knew about it. But my dad had just died 2 years prior and I had money for a little while, so I probably didn't qualify. I wish I could get something like it now! I have this weird income and can't get things like food stamps
and we are just $29 a month over the limit for state health insurance for ds
M's area has at least 4', maybe 5'. And he said they're expecting another 10" tomorrow. They've got houses and apartment buildings collapsing under it, and businesses are losing their roofs. It's insane. He said 105 people died in December in MA, directly related to the snow. I think DOK is about an hour east of him or so, but I do believe the whole state got hit really hard. Where in CT does your advisor live?
Â
Off to go get ds from school...I am stopping at the P.O. to drop off a care package for M. His car ended up costing $250 and that put him behind in EVERY bill, including rent
I mean, I'm only sending ramen and stuff, but you've got to have emergency rations if you don't make much money!! I mean-- it's not the healthiest, but it's something to stop the stomach growling, and it's cheap. Ye Gods. I remember having to live off that stuff, and it's not fun, but it's better than going hungry, especially if one has got hypoglycemia.

Somewhere in my state, the DEpt of Agriculture announced that a chicken coop roof collapsed under the weight of the ice/snow. Â Killing 85,000 chickens. Â Uhhhh.. that ain't no chicken coop.
Â
My advisor lives in beautiful Coventry. Â Up in the "quiet corner", just a stone's throw from Sturbridge, a jaunt from STorrs (main campus), a pebble toss from Windsor... I love that part of the state - everything is so close. Â Here... bah... we have little scenery outside of the hills. Â Cornfields and soy fields don't count as scenery :)

The suns come back. [insert happy dance]. We are up to 8 hours of daylight - and for about 2 hours a day it has actual warmth to it (or rather its colder in the shade.) Plus today was sunny blue skies. And I keep poking my head outside looking for aurora. A sun storm occurred today and active lights have been forecast for tonight - supposed to be visible on the horizon even through most of Canada and even all of Minnesota. We'll see if I'm functional in a few hours - it usually peaks around midnight. (Anybody know why?)
Â
DD is now 14 months. Not really talking, other than "mamamamama, da, and apple" (go figure on the apple, its her only clear word) but she will say the very first letter of various words so if she sees a bird or a bear "buh", a duck is "duh" cat is "kuh." I find it humorous - she clearly knows the word, so whats the hold up??? She is adding a couple of signs (ASL) a week too - so she gets it, but I guess a full word sound is just too much right know. Okay - she does have one non-ASL sign which we are thrilled about: if she has to pee or poop and is feeling communicative and near a toilet, she'll walk to the toilet, pat it, then pat her bottom and make "shish" sounds that we do to cue her to pee. Or if you ask her if she needs to go she'll pat her bottom and "shish." Well, that's not subtle. We'll be thrilled if she is diaper free early - by goal would be this fall. Before then it is not practical b/c her room at daycare doesn't have access to a toilet so a teacher has to get somebody on break to either take her to the bathroom so they maintain staff/child ratios in the room.
Â
Ahh, she cries. Must get her back to sleep. ---I'm back --- It's weird: asleep 1.5 hrs, she'll wake screaming/loudly crying. Goes right back down. She almost just wait for you to come and sit by her and put your hand on her back. So I'm starting to wonder if it is a separation issue "oh no, I'm alone" - although she'll do the same even when you are in bed with her until you acknowledge her. The Deva flower remedy for stress and tension seems to be helping. She likes it, she doesn't like Rescue Remedy much but will take it. But lo, I'm out of Hylands Teething Tablets - when will they come back on market??? She doesn't really like the Boiron teething liquid. So for now I'm using chamomilla, belladonna or aconite. So I don't have to carry more than one bottle when out we use Calms Forte - any other good 'blends?' She just gets so upset and unhappy we've been going with aconite a lot. Although I think that might just be my reaction since I respond very well to it myself so "here this will make it better."
