So he's not ready for solids, right?

I started giving DS some solids about 1 week before he turned six months.  He is BF and gets some formula during the week at daycare but at home we just nurse.

He has been sleeping like crap since December (long before solids).  I had been trying to troubleshoot the crappy sleep stuff and very long story short a week ago Saturday he ended up getting about 14 ounces of formula (max he's ever had at daycare in a day is 10).  Sleep Saturday night went from crappy to outright horrid - he was just so unsettled.  Last Tuesday after his 6 month wbv we switched his supplemental formula from dairy to soy.  Wednesday night he slept for a 3.5 hour stretch for the first time in more than a month!   So all last week I gave him no solids as I was just trying to sort out the formula thing, and once it appeared that he does seem to be dairy sensitive I decided to get back on the solids train.

On Sunday around 4:30 I gave him some pureed squash.  For the first time he was REALLY into it... leaning forward, mouth open, eager.  (Other times he might take a bite or two and then want no more and that would be it, I don't push it of course.)  So I let him eat about 1.5 ounces.  Sunday night - horrid sleep again.  Last night I gave no solids and he had the best night's sleep since before Christmas.

SO: even though he's interested, mooching, sits up, etc. this is a sign that his gut is not ready for solids, right?  Should I just hold off and try again in a month or so?

I have 2 DD and they have been or currently are poor sleepers. Let me just tell you what I have come to learn.

There is no rhyme or reason to the insanity.

I have tried every combination of things and they sleep when they sleep and they don't when they don't.  I highly doubt that the solids caused anything.  I also might not believe that he is dairy sensitive.  I would say if he was, there would be a lot more symptoms than poor sleep.  This is also a personal decision but I would research soy formula, I am not comfortable giving it to my children.

I think that maybe it might be too soon to decide that it was the squash that made him not sleep-- you know, the whole "correlation does not equal causation" thing. Maybe give it a try again, for a couple days in a row, and see what happens. Of course, it's not going to hurt him to delay solids, so if that's what you want to do, then definitely go with it. Or maybe start offering him stuff to gnaw on himself rather that pureed food, so he can do something while you guys are eating.
