Future of babies with infant glaucoma

Hi,

My son is almost 10 months and he was diagnosed with infant glaucoma yesterday. The doctor said he needs surgery right away and he is scheduled to have one in 2 days. Until yesterday I had no idea what glaucoma is, so you can imagine how shocking this news was to me. From what I read since yesterday and what doctor said,  surgery is the only way to fix him right away.. My concern is his future! I just want to know what I should expect. A lot of cases that I read said the baby had already developed vision problems and they couldn't see very well. I am not sure if that is my baby's case, since it seems like he can see things really well. He picks up every little thing and can recognize us from far.

The reason that we took him to the doctor was because he was very sensitive to the light. His pediatrician said we can wait until he is one to take him to the eye doctor; however I am so glad I didn't wait until then.

I would appreciate if anybody can tell me what should I expect for his future.. assuming the surgery goes well ( which I am SO hoping for) will he have a normal vision? What kind of complications should we    expect?

Thanks

I don't know about infant glaucoma, but my sister was diagnosed with glaucoma at only 23.  They told her that catching it early and continuing treatment is key to avoiding eyesight loss.  I hope that's the case for your kiddo!  (((hugs)))

Please let others know who have infants with congenital glaucoma that things will be OK. I remember feeling so depressed when my son was an infant and so worried about what would become of him. Could he survive without me if I wasn't alive anymore? I want to tell you all that it will be OK-My son is such a blessing.

There are a lot of posters that either had it as children or have children with it; most with children seem to be under Carla.
