CM and narration

I'm preparing to start hs'ing my ds, who will be turning 7 and "in" 2nd grade next year.  I've been reading a little about CM, and I like the much about the philosophy.  Ds is such a tricky kid to teach sometimes, though.  He can read something and understand it, but he's very reluctant to tell anything about it.  He will often just tell me one short sentence.  Also, I know part of the point is to let the child choose what was most important, but sometimes he just focusses on the most obscure detail, or maybe the very last bit that he read.  How do CM teachers develop the skills of narration?   I'm in the very early stages of learning about this method, so please forgive me if this is a very obvious question.  TIA

Summarizing is a difficult skill - at least for my kiddo!  One thing that helped my daughter at that age was to let her act out the story sometimes.  That would get tons more detail out.  However, she still had a tough time with actually summarizing stuff.  It was either everything down to the last little detail or almost nothing.  We now read interesting articles, usually science related, and take turns summarizing for each other.  She needed some modeling and this helped.
