Have you started a breastfeeding support group?

I want to hear how other women have supported breastfeeding moms in their communities.

I live in a small town. It is at least a three hour drive to the nearest lll meetings. Women in my town need support for breastfeeding.

Also, what can I do to encourage expecting mothers to breastfeed?

I started to reply to this yesterday and decided to hold off - the group I started met tonight for the first time!  And people (other than myself) showed up!  joy.gif

I started it about a year ago online.  My first nursing experience was total crap - I fell into every possible 'trap' that was set for me (unnecessary nipple shields, pumping to determine volume, formula supplementation) and had destroyed what any supply I could have had by three months.  When my second came along, I had a support system and read everything I could.  I realized how important that support system was to me and started a Facebook group.  It's been slow-going, but we have about 250 Mommas that give each other advice, share stories, help work through problems or just offer support.  I decided late last year that I wanted to take it live, had to postpone our first meeting and lost a little bit of momentum, so our turnout wasn't great, but I know now that I need to step it up and do more advertising between now and our next meeting.  We have a website that I blog to (infrequently), share links of interest, have started a resource list, we have a question of the day and Mom Of The Week profiles.  It's personal, friendly, and supportive - how it should be!

If you feel as if there's a need, act on it!  Call your local WIC office, a pregnancy resource center, local OBs and pediatricians.  See if someone will let you borrow their facility for an hour a month.  Contact the closest IBCLC you can find and ask if she can help, or offer her services in some way (whether it be a physical presence or not).  We have one that offered discounted visits and phone support, and a CLC offering support as well.  I'll probably ask one (or both) to come to one of our meetings and talk at some point, too.

Good luck with your endeavors, Momma!
