? Trying to figure out "lesson" schedule with Montessori influence

I think DS is ready for some structured learning time. I found that when we're at the table eating, he can be entertained with books, mazes, art, games, etc. for an hour or more. I thought I might take advantage of that focused time and start planning some "lessons" for him at each meal. I definitely don't want to go ultra-structured and buy a curriculum to follow. I plan to have activities ready and follow his lead to make sure he's enjoying the work. I am very fond of Montessori and would like to use that as a guide for planning.

DS is 4, is starting to read 3-4 letter words, understands math concepts but has trouble with reading the actual numbers, is beginning to learn to write letters, loves science projects, will sometimes get frustrated if an art project doesn't turn out 'just right', loves to read & tell stories and is interested in globes and maps.

For now, I was considering planning 3 activities per day, 4 days per week (12 "lessons"). I was thinking I could focus on one area at each sitting, yet make sure to change topics each time (a.m. language; midday math; p.m. art). I'm a little fuzzy about what Kg kids are "supposed to" learn. At the moment, I'm toying with the idea of working on these areas: language, maths, science, art, culture.

I thought about working on writing as a separate area, but then realized that it probably belongs in the language area. I do want him to have some extra practice with writing letters, but I'm not sure if I should simply include a few short letter practices during language time. I like the idea of working on Geography, but I'm a little short on ideas other than learning to make bodies of land/water & reading books about other cultures.

As far as music, I am a music teacher, so I plan to start some piano lessons a couple times per week. However, those will obviously be away from the dinner table so I'm not worrying about adding them to my planning for these purposes.

So far, "homeschooling" has meant doing nothing more than nurturing DS's interests, but I think we're both ready for me to take a more active role in the process. BTW, I know he's still little - I don't plan on going overboard with this; I will definitely follow his lead and adjust accordingly - he'll still spend the vast majority of his time in free play.

I would love it if you awesome mamas had any recommendations, ideas, or suggestions for me! Thanks in advance. :)

As soon as I saw your DS' age and Montessori influence, I thought of this blog...great Montessori ideas!

Anyone have any thoughts on sensorial material? I know Montessori is big on them, and I've created a lot on my own, but I don't know whether it's something he'll get during daily life or something I should set aside time for.
