stitching for an 8 year old help

help me think this mamas.

dd seriously wants to learn how to embroider.

she just does not care for those kits that i have got her from michaels.

so can you help me figure out how to go about this?

unlike me who has no patience, dd had the patience and skill. for a first time stitcher she made a perfect straight row of running stitch on plain fabric.

i remember in 5th grade at school using slightly thicker fabric - drawing pencil lines on them and then practising.

how did you start your little ones to sew?

Poke around on Google and Amazon and see if you can find something she likes.  She's going to be more motivated if you find something she likes.

Here are a few things I found on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Embroidery-Kids-Can-Judy-Sadler/dp/155337617X/ref=pd_sim_b_6

http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Embroidery-Klutz-Marilyn-Green/dp/1570549575/ref=pd_sim_b_15

http://www.amazon.com/Embroidery-Little-Miss-Crafty-embellish/dp/1600585981/ref=pd_sim_b_27

Maybe that will give you some ideas.

awww thank you for poking around.

here is what i found that dd loves.

http://www.amazon.com/Doodle-Stitching-Collection-Embroidery-Designs/dp/1600595812/ref=pd_sim_b_1

she loves the whole doodle designs. so we looked at the book in the bookstore and came up with our own designs.

however we have started with a small side bag for dd. more like a purse that i will stitch for her after she finishes the embroidery.

right now we are just practising on the fabric. using http://www.needlenthread.com/videos

thanks. its funny. she wants to practise the stitches rather than 'make' something. i have some of her grandpas handkerchief. i'll have her make some small flowers and give them to her dad. or whatever design she chooses to have.

now that she is getting into all these stuff it suddenly seems like we hardly have any time for anything.

she goes to school and then she has to read (she's a bookworm, cant go to sleep without reading), play with the kitty, play outside and THEN embroider.

Sounds like your dd is doing great.  With our brownie troop, I bought that stiff plastic stuff (looks like aida cloth, but is stiff plastic), some tapestry needles and yarn.  They practiced stitches with that.  They didn't need a hoop, they didn't need to be able to poke the hole in the fabric.  And, if they wanted a straight stitch, it was easy to actually keep it straight.  At the end, they were able to make a design on their square.

Your dd seems beyond that, but I wanted to share in case anyone else had a use for it.

I use that plastic stuff for the bottoms of purses and totes.  It helps them to stand flat on the bottoms and, unlike cardboard, won't get destroyed if I accidentally toss it in the washer.
