I'm considering hiring a student doula. I haven't signed the contract because I was negotiating it but I did give her a verbal yes.
She's the first doula I clicked with and I have no other suggestions. I'm 25 weeks now. I thought I had made up my mind until my OB asked me at the last appt- "are you sure you want a student?" My OB told me she didn't really like some doulas either. I should have asked her for a recommendation of one she liked.
The biggest reason I like my doula is she doesn't seem like she would prevent medical treatment if it was necessary. I had some doulas scare me even out of the hospital. I want to be at a hospital. I want to try natural birth but I want the options of medication if necessary. I'd prefer an epidural for example, if it was necessary to prevent a C-section. That experience happened to my perspective student doula.
I'm sure I could afford a full price doula. I'm just wondering what doula's charge in Northern NJ near NYC. My student doula is charging $450. Is that normal? Would a full cost doula be much more expensive? And well, it's my body and my baby, is the expense worth it? Oh the $450 includes 3 visits - 2 prenatal and 1 post (or the other way if I prefer) and she promises to be on call the entire month - I'm due in the middle of May. I'll be her only client that month and she'll be there the entire birth. I wanted a labor doula not really a post partum as I'll have my mother in law and mother around for that.
She will have attended births before but I will be her first or second by herself. Has anyone had problems with a student? Or success? She seems really enthusiastic and eager.
Thanks in advance.
