SCD for Celiac...Worth a try or leave it?

Thread Starter

I was diagnosed with celiac in Dec, and have been GF for about a month and a half.  I'm feeling a bit better...on most days.  Through a celiac association meeting, I heard it can take a year to feel better.

I've come across the SCD, and am playing with the idea of trying it.  I'm wondering if it's worth a go...would I feel better sooner?  Should I just be patient with the GF thing?  Also, my son (22 months) has had digestive issues for a while, he's also GF, but would it be worth trying him?

It seems a big commitment, and I would REALLY struggle with the lack of grains.  I love bread and baking and cookies :)  and often the only thing that really fills me is the grains.  I really want to heal too, and if the SCD would be worth it I think I could commit.  I would love to get pregnant again this summer, so would like to be back to feeling good by then.  Would the SCD help me accomplish this?

It is a lot...maybe try it in 6 months if you still don't think there is enough improvement. In some celiacs, there is secondary lactose intolerance, sl maybe go dairy free? I was able to reintroduce it later, starting with probiotic dairy (like kefir and yogurt) I saw a nutritionist and she put me on a regimen of L-Glutamine (helps with cell turnover, because what you really are doing is trying to grow a healthy new gut lining, not injured by gluten) also multivitamins, omega oils, and non-dairy probiotics (since I also cut out dairy for 3 months)

If you think there may be candida/yeast problem but don't want to go 'all out' yet, limit refined sugar intake and overly processed flours (white rice flour, etc) Opt for higer fiber flours or nut or bean flours.

Google elana amsterdam "gluten free almond flour" for a good blog

There is also coconut flour, chickpea flour, quinoa, millet, sourgum...

I personally don't think you need to go whole hog SCD.  I'd try paleo-grain and sugar free-which is far less limiting and every bit as healing (IMHO.)

Hi there,

I am an undiagnosed celiac and been diary/casein free for 13 years, gluten free for 10 years and now on SCD for 1 year.

In my opinion it should definetely NOT take a year to feel better.  You should FEEL better right after eliminating gluten (within a week) and for sure after a month.   If you are several weeks or months into GF and don't feel better, there is something else that you need to elimninate.

My guess is that you should go diary/casien free too.

Instead of going full bore into SCD, I would read the books and gain the wisdom so that your grain and food choices can be informed.  Like maybe eliminating potatoes, but allowing corn tortillas.  And choosing to sprout your GF grains etc.

Two more things.   the wisdom I gained from the SDC and GAPS books was that replacing refined carbohydrates with refined GF carbohydrates is a big problem.  Instead, alter the way you eat and make healthier choices all around.  ANd, once you commit to SCD you may not be able to go back.  What I mean is that you may find relief now just by going GF/CF and slowly over time (maybe years) adapt your diet and make the changes that will ultimately leave you eating on SCD and GAPS.

Please feel free to PM or ask any questions you like.  Going GAPS/SCD has been both a blessing for me and a curse.... it is damn hard sometimes...

Good Luck
