Gassy Newborn - Food Intolerances?

I posted this in Breastfeeding a few days ago, but I haven't gotten a single reply so I'll try here.

My 5 week old is very gassy. She is farting all day long, very smelly, sometimes painful farts. My midwife told me it's normal, just the digestive system adjusting and developing the gut bacteria.  The public health nurse suggested burping her more frequently and inclining her during/after feedings because the gas may be due to oversupply. I've been told she'll just grow out of it.

But how do I know if it's more than that? If she's reacting to something in my diet, how do I narrow it down?

From my reading, smelly painful gas means that something is going on. I never researched it pertaining to newborns, though. You may want to look into probiotics.

Fwiw, ds2 (19mos old)  had uncomfortable gas as a newborn. I was told it was normal too, and he did outgrow the worst of it (I don't remember by when). BUT he does have food sensitivities now. And he recently went through a phase where he was restless and fussy at night, and it reminded me a lot of how he was as a newborn- it was obvious both times that his belly was gassy and bothering him.

For him, my best guesses are it's either yeast overgrowth or a food. It did stop, but I changed a few different things at the same time, so I'm not sure what helped.

Both my babies have been super gassy/farty/burpy. Do your best get the burps out before they head south. And I mean, don't give up until you get a burp! I still had to vigorously burp my one year old after he nursed. Some babies just take in more air when they nurse, so you can look at the latch, but food sensitivities should also be suspected. How are her bowel movements? Really stinky toots may just be an indication that she's getting backed up and needs to poop. Do you EC? The EC'ing position is great for pooping and getting gas out, simply by holding them that way.
