Is this possible?

I am pregnant with my third child. The first child I had natural without medication and labor went very smoothly. I did go into preterm labor at 34 weeks, but it was due to a kidney infection. A shot stopped the labor immediately and an antibiotic cleared the infection and I had him at 38 weeks. My second pregnancy has me very nervous about delivery this time around.

AT 31 weeks with child number 2 I had a tiny spot (like what  you find in a chicken egg) when I wiped. I called my doctor but they were closed. So, I called the ER. They told me that the only thing they could tell me is to come in. So, I dropped my husband off at his softball game and drove to the hospital with my two year old son. I told my husband I would be back in a little bit and that I was sure they were just going to tell me to stop picking up my son.

I do the pee in the cup thing and and the nurse comes in the room to check me. I didn't think anything of it until she really started to hurt me. I told her she was hurting me. She kept on pushing, not just a little finger like I had been checked with my first. I couldn't see what she was doing, but I am certain she had her ARM in there. She actually got on her knees on the end of my bed and had her face pressed against the inside of my thigh. I had my foot on her shoulder and told her to stop because she was hurting me. I had tears rolling down my cheeks because of the pain she was causing me. She says, "I can almost feel the babies head".

She then tells me that the baby is going to have a lot of hair because she could feel it. Then she left the room. About 5 minutes later I start having contractions. They came in and put a monitor on me, I told them they needed to give me the shot that stops contractions. They wouldn't do it. After about 30 minutes of contractions they said the doctor (oncall doctor, mine was on vacation) told them to give me these pills that desolve under my tongue. I again asked for the shot and was refused it. I call my husband and tell him he should get a ride to the hospital because they were now going to observe me overnight. He gets to the hospital about 30 minutes after that. So an hour after I started having contractions.

He called his mom who lived about 1 1/2 hours away and ask her to come get our son because he wanted to stay with me at the hospital. He grabbed my son and told me he would be back soon. A different nurse came in and wanted to check me. I told her no because the last nurse really hurt me. She looked at me strangly and told me it will not hurt. She checks me and looks at my husband who had his hand on the door knob, "you aren't going anywhere, she is having this baby now, she is dialated to 5".

Of course, I start to cry and freak out because I am only 31 weeks and it is just way too early. 30 minutes later I am completely dilated to 10. I have zero urge to push, they do an ultra sound because they thought maybe she was breech. They told me she wasn't breech but she was transverse high up in my belly. They said they needed to do an emergency C section because if my water broke it could harm or kill my baby. So, the nurses watched my two year old son in the nurses station while my husband and I went into the OR. She was in the NICU for 36 days. She didn't have any problems, just needed to mature enough to breath and eat!

They are treating me as high risk with this pregnancy because I had my daughter so early. I refused the progesterone injections because I do not feel like I went into labor naturally. I feel the nurse put me into labor. The OB seems to think that isn't possible. What do you think?

How horrid!  I'm terribly sorry about your previous birth experience, it feels to me like the nurse who was checking you and hurting you had no idea what they were doing and perhaps did indeed cause early labor.  However, I have no real medical knowledge or background so it is more of a gut feeling.  I would avoid that hospital at all costs, is there somewhere else you can go?

What a terrible experience! I'm so sorry that nurse did that to you. But it does seem very strange that you had no symptoms before that exam, and labor started shortly after. Maybe she did a manual stretch of your cervix? Is there any way you can avoid that hospital? It sounds like their care was poor (to say the least) if not criminal. And what nurse tells a pregnant mom she can feel hair? Seriously? Like you want to know she touched the head through your cervix?? At 31 weeks! That level of "care" is horrid! I'm so angry on your behalf. I imagine you are rightfully very worried about exams now.

Did they ever find a cause for your second child coming early? Any sign of infection? It is hard to know from your story if the nurse caused the labor, or just sped up a labor that was going to happen soon anyway. I know that they say that sweeping the membranes and cervical pressure will not put a mom into labor unless she is ready, but i think if there was already a small issue (like infection) a rough dilation like that could push you into early labor. Esp. considering your history in that your body seems likely to labor early when stressed. In either case, I hope you carry this current babe to term, and have a supportive and smooth VBAC.
