Does anyone know how this works~ Pregnant, DH got new insurance at work- Will the birth be covered?

So I am in my last trimester and DH got a new job with new insurance.  He hasn't even started yet, so I don't want to call them and ask a bunch of questions.  I don't even know the name of the insurance!  But his coverage will have started by the time I give birth.  Will it cover me then or is that a pre-existing condition or something?

All I have ever heard is that birth is not ever considered a pre-existing condition.

Pg can be considered a pre-existing condition, not in group policies, but certainly private. What might trip you up is if you have to wait until x date until enrolling you guys on his policy. There are some policies that cover pg only after a certain time period as well. The only way you will know is to call HR and ask.

Well, it depends on whether or not the insurance company considers pregnancy a pre-existing condition.  Most will.  That being said, as long as you don't have a lapse in coverage of more than 30 days then you shouldn't need to worry, unless of course the policy doesn't cover maternity care.  If you've had a lapse in coverage of over 30 days then they are allowed to deny you if it's in their policies.

Sometimes pregnancy is counted as a pre-existing condition. Also most of the time insurance with a job (at least in my experience) takes 90 days before starting. If you're in your third trimester I would think the insurance probably won't be in effect before the birth. It's always worth calling to see though. Have you checked on getting medicaid or other state insurance? That may be an option for you if his insurance won't cover you or won't be in effect in time.

I'm pretty positve that pregnancy can not be considered a pre-existing condition, it's illegal.  Like other posters said though if the policy doesn't come into effect until after your birth then you'll have a problem.  I don't know what happened with your DH last employer but have you looked into COBRA?  If you're going to do medicade jump on it bec/ here it takes forever!!  But they do cover you for three months prior to enrollment.  Goodluck!

My dh switched jobs when I was in my third trimester. There were no problems at all, the new insurance started right away and everything was covered. It was a high risk pregnancy too (gd). Good luck.

Did you have continuous coverage or was there a break in coverage?  Like other posters have said, if there was no gap in coverage longer than 30 days, you shouldn't have any issues.  And, as a different poster mentioned, I am pretty sure that it's illegal to concider pg a pre-existing condition.

With both of my last 2 pg, we had insurance changes mid pg.  With dd2, my DH changed jobs when I was about 6 months along.  We had no gap in coverage, but it did take a month for it to kick in (meaning we had the policy but it had to be paid ahead, so it didn't start paying out until a month after we started paying.)  Other than that one month that I had to do self pay for that OB visit, I had no problems with coverage of the rest of the pg.

With dd3, my DH was in the same job, but they were spastically changing insurance companies last year.  We went through 3 different companies in a 12 month period.  I have had no problem with coverage related to that (we have had other issues, but they are not related to the insurance company change.

I am on state insurance now and have been since the beginning of my pregnancy, but we are moving to a different state so I will lose that~ but I will have be able to show I was covered. I could apply for new state ins. in our new place, which I guess we might because DH's insurance is going to be like $800/month.

DH thinks his company said they offer Blue Cross, and they definitely said we can enroll thirty days after he starts. I would still be pregnant then, unless I went super early...

Thanks for all the replies so far!
