Diapers cutting into DS chubby tummy

I've just started CDing my first at 6 months. He's a big baby and I can't help but feel that no matter how I fasten them or what cover I use, when he sits up they push into his belly. He doesn't seem bothered but if it's soon after he eats, sometimes it causes him to spit up (esp. if he's leaning forward while sitting up). The disposables also pushed into his belly so I know part of it is just how he's shaped but with cloth there is so much more bulk, it just looks uncomfortable! I'm currently using flats with the origami fold, snappi'd and PUL covers. I've recently ordered some looser covers like Bummis pull on and Litewrap thinking it might help. Does anyone else feel this way. Are they supposed to push in like that?

Btw, I'm not fastening them really tight. I always check to make sure I can get my hand in there. It's only a problem when he's sitting.

I know what you mean!  My LO is 5 months old - not quite sitting up yet, but his problem are his chubby thighs!  I am using G-diapers (or trying to) and they leave angry red marks on his thighs after i take them off - but if i make them looser  - they dont hold anything and his clothes get wet/dirty.  i also tried MotherEase Air Flow diaper covers - which was only a little bit better.  I am going to try some wool covers next - they seem like they will be more 'forgiving' .  Hopefully we will learn something on this post!

Yep, we had the same problem. Pull-up covers ARE better, definitely. Also, I found that Stacinator So Simple covers were great because they have fleece at the waist and legs. Wool is also awesome.

I find snaps better than Aplix because there is "give" between the snaps.

The problem will resolve itself for you soon though because he'll get moving, and won't be stuck in one place with it digging in as much - and he'll likely change shape. At about 6 months I was tempted to overhaul my stash in an attempt to find something that didn't dig in - luckily my finances didn't allow that because now it's not an issue much at all.

Oooh!  Those look awesome!  I have yet to find ANY cloth system that i like....one leaves red marks, one leaks - i get something i like and LO grows out of them....maybe i have commitment problems with this!  Thanks for the recomendation

Ohhh I hear you. Every time I think I have finally found a CD "solution", something changes. A new rash, he grows, red marks. One keeps him nice and dry but the gussets dig in - another doesn't leave marks on his legs but the Aplix scratches him, etc etc It drives me nuts!

I spend a lot of time thinking about diapers! I did not have this problem with DD - she did great in pockets, and I used them from the beginning of her diapering "career" until she potty trained.

(For the record, it seems for me that a "system" isn't the right approach. I have a whole bunch of different diapers and use them for different purposes. At home, it's loose fitteds or prefolds with wool soakers or fleece covers or pants, when we go out it's BumGenius pockets. If nothing's perfect, at least it spreads things around a little...)

Yeah - i think that was my first mistake - i got a great rate on used diapers and got like a dozen. - so after spending that money - i didnt want to buy much new stuff to try it out.  I got some G-Diapers as a present and loved them , and bought more - also used - until DS outgrew them - hes 21 lbs and not quite 6 months old yet.  Meanwhile, i spent quite a bit on my make at home supplies.  I was quite shocked to learn there are more types of cloth diapers than there are types of cars!

I am starting to slowly try new types of diapers - without committing to large quantities!  I ordered some nice yarn off of http://www.yarn.com/  cant wait to get knitting!

Thanks for the ideas- I also feel like I spend a lot of time thinking about diapers! I've been trying to get a system down that contains DS's blowouts.....he's a major blowout kinda guy! So far I love my flats, they work a lot better for me than the prefolds do. I've just had problems with the covers. I finally got the stuff I ordered, Bummis whisper pants don't fit him quite right, Motherease Airflow are actually pretty great so far...they leave a little marking on his skin but not bad, Imse Vimse Soft snap is definitely my favorite. Very light, trim and functional, it just seems like as soon as I've got the stuff he's already getting too big for it! Sometimes I wonder if CDing is really a cheaper option than disposables ;)

Honestly? I'm not sure it is! I mean, it can be. If you can make prefolds/covers work nicely, or if you can hand them down from one child to another, you're well ahead. But I think I struck about even with DD - partly because I was kind of an addict and wanted one of every pocket. But hey, we were having more children, so no biggie, right? We'd be set except for the newborn sizes.

But about half of the pockets came out of storage with shot leg elastic, some came out with pinholes around the leg casings (both likely my fault because for the first year or so I always put them in the dryer). And while I could fix the elastic, DS gets rashy in PUL. So I've salvaged a few of the favourites for going out, and the rest I've either cut up to make fleece liners or have given up on.

I AM still ahead, I'm sure of it, since it turns out he's best in prefolds and breathable covers (and I can knit!) But definitely not the savings we were expecting. However, it's still healthier for him and the environment, so I'm good with it.
