Learning ASL with your kid

We did baby signing with DD but stopped once she started talking.  Anyways, she was dinking around the starfall.com website the other night and there's a part where there's some sign language and she flipped out and just wanted to watch  signing videos all night.  She's especially interested in the alphabet.  I think part of it is that now her fine motor skills are such that she can actually sign a lot of letters that she couldn't before.   Anyways since then she keeps asking me about signing and since we're planning on doing baby signing anyways with the baby, I figured it might be worthwhile to actually pick it up again with DD.

The problem is, is that before I prettty much maxed out my signing skills.  She learned probably about 300 words?  But since I've never had any formal training it was just stuff I found on the internet.  We actually live in a non-English speaking country so it's not like I could even take classes locally or anything.  I also work outside of the home so I don't have a ton of time  either to learn it (and I know DH won't take the time but to pick up a few things from me) so I'm basically looking for online resources or books that I could get ahold of to actually learn the grammar so I can speak with DD (and eventually the baby).  I'd really like to actually learn the grammar and everything since it got to the point with DD that she wanted to sign in sentences before but I wasn't sure about the exact structure.   Any resources that you could recommend would be a great help, thanks!

Signing Time DVDs? They're at our library here so you could check out a big variety. There's a ton of episodes and it could be expensive to buy them all. There's an "ABC signs" episode!

Thanks! As for signing time, we did get them a lot when she was younger.  She loves them but I'm looking for something with actual conversations more (or how the grammar works etc) since she knows pretty much all the signs from the signing time DVD's already (at the height of her signing she'd sign about 4-5 word sentences and had some of the signing time songs memorized).  Our local library won't be any help since we're not in an English speaking country. winky.gif

I really think to *truly* learn a language in a authentically fluent way, kids need to learn from a teacher who is a fluent-speaking teacher, a real person right there with whom they can interact (there is actually a lot of research on this).  Its especially tricky if you want to learn real ASL word order, as opposed to signed English word order.

I just managed to find a woman in town who is an ASL translator.  I found her through the local preschools and school district, they call on her when they have a deaf child enrolled.  Anyway, she teaches a class in my home to my (hearing) children (3 and 7), one other family with 2 hearing girls, and a little 4 y.o. girl who is deaf.  We moms are learning along with our kids.  The girls all work and play and sign together, it is really adorable.  They are learning so much from each other.  Its awesome.
