What does storing food have to do with your religion?
Is it commanded in the Book of Mormon?
Or is it something your religion tells you that you must do?
And what is the religious reason for it?
thank you

Mainly we see it as a form of emergency preparedness.

What does storing food have to do with your religion? It has to do with being self reliance, we store food so that we can fall back on it if we have a bad financial month and don't have money to buy food or if we are in some sort of natural disaster and there is a shortage at the stores.
Is it commanded in the Book of Mormon? I do not believe that it is in either the Book of Mormon or the Bible. It has been part of the church since near the very beginning of the church. Back then it was more to make sure to grow enough, and then do lots of canning.Â
Or is it something your religion tells you that you must do? The way i see it is not so much a commandment to have the food storage as much as we do see it as a commandment to do all we can to be self reliant and to avoid having to rely on others to take care of us. We are also cautioned to avoid accruing a lot of debt.
And what is the religious reason for it?Â
thank you

Basically it's a reaction to the immense amounts of trials the early church members went through. They had to pick up and move a few times, they walked across the country to Utah to find a place no one else wanted so they couldn't be run out of, and lived through a few droughts, famines, and floods once they got here. It's also really handy to have around- once you have a decent stock of pantry items and canned goods, especially if you buy fresh in the summer and can for in the winter every year, it's a lot easier to plan meals.

As others have said we are counseled to be prepared for unforseen events. We also keep emergency kits in our homes and cars.

My goodness, in the early years of our marriage our food storage saved us more than once. We have also been snowed in for weeks on end. Almost every spring, our water goes bad and we are without for about 10 days. It is very comforting to know that even if the worst should happen, we are prepared the best we can be.
