DH was vaccinated today. Should I keep my distance?

I'm almost 10 weeks, coming off two miscarriages in two years of ttc.  I am very cautiously pregnant and not telling anyone yet.

We don't vaccinate our boys. DH gets that. However, the military doesn't seem to care. He got diptheria, whooping cough, and tetanus. They don't normally do all that but since they are deploying in the fall they had to. Will being around him have any effect on the baby or me?  I know of people who get the flu after someone close to them gets vaccinated against it  Thanks.

some looking at wikipedia tells me that for the diphtheria and tetanus, just a modified form of the toxin is contained, and depending on the version for the pertussis it's either killed cells, or a cellular component. you wouldn't be able to catch an infection from any of these things. the risk of catching something from someone because they were just vaccinated comes when a modified version of the live virus or bacteria is used (chickenpox and the older polio vaccine that we don't use anymore are the most common examples). so you won't be able to catch something from your husband because of the vaccine.

Yep, like the pp said- those are all killed vaxes- no concern.

The live vaxes include:

MMR

chickenpox

rotavirus (only given to infants)

smallpox

Others are right, it's not a live virus.  No worries about you catching anything serious from the vaccine.

I wouldn't worry about it any more than vaccines can tax the immune system a little more.  It might make him more likely to get, say, the common cold.  Just pump him with some extra D3 and C to help get his immune function back to normal so he doesn't come down with (and bring home) all the other crud that's floating around this time of year!

Thanks, ladies.  I am so paranoid about this pregnancy that it helps a lot to ask and get such kind reassurances.

He had the smallpox vaccine when I was pregnant with DS1 and wasn't allowed to touch me when I saw him on leave.  It was sad but worth the caution.
