Positive/Negative Experiences at Nassau University Medical Center

I am planning on delivering my baby at NUMC and I'm looking for feedback from others who have used this hospital.  I am hoping to have a waterbirth and will be using a midwife.  I've heard alot of mixed reviews on the hospital.  The thing that scares me is that from what I read they deal alot with inmates and that it's not necessarily the safest hospital.  Any information is greatly appreciated!!!

I will also be delivering there and I'm also a bit apprehensive about the hospital.  Hopefully someone can shed some information please!

My 2nd child was born at NUMC in the waterbirth room, and I'm going to have my 3rd there whenever he decides to show up (I'm 38 weeks right now).  I had a fantastic birth, the waterbirth room is nice and new and very private, and I really love my midwife.  I know it's important though to remember that there is one waterbirth room, and there is always a slight possibility you won't be able to use it (fyi, I heard they are going to be adding additional waterbirth rooms... althought I don't know when they'll be finished).  As far as recovery goes, it's not the cushiest hospital on the island to stay at, but I definitely felt safe there.  Yes, the hospital treats the inmates from the Nassau County jail, but they are on their own floor, and this was totally not an issue for me.  The babies have the same alarm bands as in every other hospital and visitors can't just walk onto the postpartum ward.  Also, they didn't give me any trouble about having my son in my room just about 24/7 (except for the daily newborn check) and having him sleep in my bed.  I think that if a homebirth isn't an option for you (it's just not possible for my living situation), you should definitely consider having your baby at NUMC, I had a really great experience there.
