Cough Remedies

My DS (30 months) has a persistent cough, which is worse at night.  He has a little runny nose, but not bad and no fever.

He seems to be sleeping through the coughing, but it goes on for 1-2 hrs, then it will stop but then he'll start coughing again a few hours later.  I'm always listening to him over the monitor in case he sounds like he is struggling or throws up, but so far it's just a dry cough while he sleeps.  In the past, I would wake him to give OTC meds, but I've stopped waking him because I felt an awake coughing toddler was worse than a sleeping coughing toddler KWIM?

At night he takes a warm bath, we rub vicks on his chest and feet, elevate his crib and run a vaporizer in his room.   Unfortunately, he will NOT take honey (he eats it with his Peanut Butter sandwiches, but not in the raw).

I haven't tried tea yet (I'm not a tea drinker) and I'm not sure what to get or how to make it for him (He is a picky eater and not big into trying new things)....any suggestions?

Any other suggestions on things to try?

BTW  -  a few months ago he had a long spell of coughing & whizzing and his Dr. put him on the albuterol, which seem to help a little, but his cough was persistent and then he put him on Singular - which worked like a charm.    I've resisted using either of these meds just because I like to let things run their course first...but now after a little research I've realized that he may have asthma type flare ups that are brought on by a viral infection and so maybe I should start administering these meds again?    Anyone BTDT?

Boiron makes Chestal for kids which helps my daughter who had coughing spells at night and naptime for several weeks after a bad cold.  As someone who has/had asthma and has been on various meds for it I see the benefits of medication but if it was my kid I would be loathe to put her on those meds.  I know that doesn't help but I certainly understand your struggle.  Do you have a natural food store nearby the employes an herbalist who might be able to give some ideas on what other things to try?
